When is the Cambelt Change on an MY00 Turbo?
#1
This is crap! Can we get an official answer from Subaru at all?
I have a MY00 (V reg) Dutch import. The service schedule in the owners manual says it doesn't need doing until 60k. Tiley's (Bristol main dealer) first of all said 45k then I told them about what it says in the schedule and they said it'll be 60k then.....they also said there was a bit of confusion on the subject!
Other places seem to be saying 45k, but I think that's because that is when the MY99's and some of the MY00's have it done at.
Edited to say:
Where abouts does the Y or X appear? Anyone give an example of the complete number?

i spoke to a dealer about this last week, as my car is rapidly approaching 3 years old!
Apparently it depends on the chassis number, not the MY00 alone. The dealer reckons that technically some MY00's are 99's, and so it's 45k or 3 years. It's confusing to say the least.

I've always been told that MY00 is 60k. It's in the handbook and if you speak to a dealer that knows what he's talking about he'll say the same!
Edited to sound better!

OK, here is the full story if you want it.
Originally on all Impreza Turbo models, the UK servicing schedule listed the cam belt change at 45K.
In an effort to reduce the "whole life" costs of Impreza ownership, IM changed the servicing schedule to 10K intervals instead of the previous 7.5K interval.
This was around the time of the release of the New Age Impreza.
Subaru Marketing were trying to make the Impreza a more attractive/affordable proposition to fleet purchasers, but that was the principle reason behind the change to the servicing schedule.
We (and a lot of other 'decent' dealers) still advise that the 7.5K service interval schedule is more appropriate in the long run.
Mike.

I also thought it was dependent on the chassis number. I think a 'Y' somewhere in there indicates cambelt at 60k. Don't quote me on that last detail, but as mentioned above, earlier models (pre '00) needed belt change at 45k, later models (post '00) at 60k.
Mine was first registered June 2000 and the dealer advised me that belts needed changing at 60k service.
As usual, not only mileage dependent but also age, as with all servicing.

Rang my local dealer and yes as my chassis number has a Y in it the cambelt doesnt need changing until 60k service. As Ive only done 18K I think it can wait until 60k.
Much cheaper 45k service than I thought it was going to be

Yeah I am a little confused too. AFAIK the 10K service intervals apply to MY01 and later i.e. the Bugeye WRX and not the classic MY00 and previous.

What did they change on that model of car to suddenly allow the cambelt to last until 60k? Apparently cambelt breakages are v expensive. Have an MY00 due for 45k service next week. They advised me 60k for the change but something tells me I should change it now to save pain later on....

I have had a cambelt drop on a previous car and believe me this is no barrel of laughs. Apart from the inconvenience the cost can reach epidemic levels depending on the damage done. The way I look at a cambelt change is this. Whether u change it at 45000 miles or 60000 miles. You are probably going to sell the car before it reaches its expiry date anyway - from when u have it changed. So if you are a pesimistic person get it changed at 45000 if you are a gambling person get it changed at 60000.I'd go for 50000 if you cant make your mind up. A garage will also inspect your present belt and tension for not a lot of money and give there verdict.

JC,
Gambling doesn't come into it. Yes, if you want to change things before they are required as required by Subaru then okay - do it. But if you don't it is becuase you trust what Subaru says not because you are gambling. If mine gives up before 60k or the required time interval, then Subaru can expect to get involved with putting things right.

My MY00, first registered Jan. 01
Cambelt due @ 45,000/3yrs, according to the service book. It'll be done in Jan 04,i.e. 3yrs old, even though the car only has 25,000 miles on it.

I had the belt changed at 45k on my MY00 Turbo, after I was told by IM that because in the service stamp book it shows that the belt is to be changed at 45k, not 60k, for the warranty to be valid it had to be done at 45k. If i had left it till 60k and the belt had snapped, I wouldn't be covered under warranty for the resultant damage.
I wasn't best impressed at the time I can tell you, especially after I pointed out that the vehicle manual it states 60k. FWIW, the dealer was also under the impression that the MY00 cars still had to be done at 45k.
Still, it made the 60k service costs more bearable !

we seem to be talking purely about miles here, which seems a bit worrying
If I wait until 60k my MY00 will probably be about six or seven years old, obviously there's some middle ground. Is anybody changing belts at exactly 3 years, or is the general approach to wait until you reach the designated 45k or 60k mark?
Just for info, my local dealership said that based on my car: MY00, 'Y' chassis no (60k), on 31k miles - could wait until it was four years old easily, by then it might have reached 45k...
( but then he wouldn't be paying if it went KAAHBOOOM... )

Haven't read the whole thread but...
my service book on MY00 says 45k BUT I've just had this service and no cambelt was done. Osborne's in Colchester (official dealer) advised that this was changed by Subaru to 60k a few years ago as they decided it wasn't needed as regularly as at first they had thought.
I'll be putting a note in my service book to ensure I don't forget to do the cambelt on 60k...!
