CAM BELT
#1
How much will a Subaru dealer charge me for a cam belt change on my 2001 Impreza and is this something that a non franchised dealer could handle.
This being the case, anyone know of a reputable dealer in Derbyshire?
Thanks

well a 45K service (includes the belt) cost me £309 at the main dealers
owch.
yes the belt is £100. Can't understand why, most other cars are more than half that!
Suffice to say - they aint doing it again. If I'd have known the price was going to be so high I'd have done it myself. Its a pretty easy job as you can actually get at the belt - unlike peugoet diesels, mondeos, rover 600's etc, where you need to take off all sorts of gubbings/ wheels etc just to get at the belt!
Next time I will think before they ask if I want the cambelt changed whilst its serviced

Even £400 seems cheap for a 45K service. My 30K service (a big one for a 2001 WRX on a 12 month / 10K service schedule cost me £450!
So if I had to throw the cam belt job on top I think I might end up feeling severely stiffed. I'd gladly have a go, but if I end up allowing the cam shafts to rotate slightly it's probably goodbye head and maybe block as well. That's why I'd really prefer somone else to do it and take a moderate amount of cash from me.
Cheers

Ali, changing the cambelt on a scoob is different from other cars apparently as its a pain in the ****!! Good luck if you decided to do it yourself
Dealers charge stupid money on this cause they dont even like doing the cambelt. They prefer doing the other services which only take 20 minutes and they make their money quicker

ALL
Halfords (AA garages)
£171 inc parts and vat
only exception is if tensioners need doing
oh and 10% off for AA members
my feelings if they bend it doing it... they mend it

The belt is more expensive as its over twice as long as most other cam belts, They are a pig to get at as well, we charge 2 hours labour for a cambelt.
Do Halfords use an OEM cambelt?
The cambelt tensioners are a swine for leaking, if its leaking it needs changing.

Hi Mike
re your question do halfords fit oem belts..
i think the question should be
Do suabaru???
to be perfectly honest unless subaru are one of the big boys
GMC Ford Toyota the answers no
no automotive company can afford to produce all its parts itself..
hence the term tiered supplier if you supply to a company who then supplys the car manufacturer you are second tier..
the company who i work for are tier 1 ie we supply straight into
the car companys then the question what is oem is irrelevant
ford may fit champion spark plugs but they dont make them,
conversly subaru will source there cambelts from a supplier or number of suppliers all who will be tier 1 and quality approved..
to be an automotive supplier either tier 1 or 2 your parts must meet the original spec laid down by the customer ( motor co)
you never know you may end up supplying to them!!
one to think about...
a scooby is made up of thousands of parts
all sourced from the cheapest suppliers!!!

OK, slightly misleading...... What I meant was, are they using a "genuine" belt supplied by the same people who make the belts for Subaru, or a much cheaper alternative?
Also of course, if Subaru use a supplier exclusively for OE parts supply, that IS classed as an OEM part. I wasn't trying to say Subaru make them personally.
I had somebody offer me Impreza cam belts for £21.00 each the other day....... (I said No). We only use OEM (Gates) Cam belts.
