Which is only 30,000 more than the 360, (which had 70,000 available at launch) and considering they had 220,000 ps3s available it doesn't sound too impressive to me. The 360 continued to sell hard for several weeks afterwards (remember the long waiting lists), but there is plenty of ps3 stock available.
It'll be more interesting to see what the figures look like in 6 months time when the differences between a staggered and a global launch will have been evened out. Only then will we get a true picture of which release was more successful.
I'm expecting the wii to eclipse them both (for some bizarre reason)

To be honest Iain i think the 360 wasn't readily available of the shelf for a good deal over the several weeks you mentioned, certainly seemed it.
But to top all you still can't go in to a shop and buy a Wii 4months later.

It's funny (and at the same time slightly ridiculous) to see those same people as above now downplaying and backpedalling and trying to claw back some credibility by still criticising and detracting, despite the hard facts.
BTW they sold 165,000, which is actually more than double X360's first weekend, not 'only' 30,000 more. And at a higher price point. And not geared around a gift / holiday period.
I'm not one to day I told you so, so I won't.

I was responding to the quote that said they sold 100,000 (which is only 30,000 more than the 360 launch). To me, that doesn't sound impressive given the length of time it took to release it over here, the ready availability of stock etc. If it was more than that then fair enough, although the fact that there are so many still on the shop shelves suggests a massaging of the figures somewhere along the line

That was in response to Iain earlier in the thread, not to you. I really don't care what you think, this forum is about more than just you and your opinion. HTH.

Werent people holding back on buying the 360 on launch though to see what the PS3 would be like and then it ws put back, and back?
Does it ultimately matter which sold more, its the games that count isnt it?

I just wonder how much better the sales had been at the begining of the month and not at the end. We certainly have apprentices who would have been buying them up if it had been on pay day!

Local Gamestation as one in the window for £399 <preowned>
Had a go on one in Sony centre and played Resistance of Man (I think ) same old gameplay running around shooting monsters , didnt look any better than a 360 game , but Ill stick to my Wii for now .

Still cant work out where its being pitched...
i got the free mag from dixons, and read through it, now based on the article and points raised here, for which i was shot down, i still cant see why Sony have gone for this total media concept route..
And its not just me, i raised the points described in the press blurb at work, where we have a mixed bag of gamers from all formats and the comments that came back were:
Connective Convegent:
Plug in a mouse, a camera, a keyboard, hook up to broadband, download linux...
Response from colleagues
Why? we allready have PC,s to do that... Linux? whats linux?
Future proof:
Regular firmware updates will keep the hardware at the cutting edge.. Download content music & videos
Response from colleagues
Confused? given that pc,s and hardware becomes out of date in approx six months, how will the unit last for 5years?USB ports:
Plug in an mp3 player, camera, memory card
Response from colleagues
So will it allow us to pull media from our ipods? will it run itunes? will it even talk to our ipods? Given that an average Ipod has a 80gig drive, how will the 60 gig cope?
There are aspects of the console i like, but will Sony play ball... given that they had a fit when bleem was released (ps1) And they hate the fact the PSP is a homebrew dream, (how many firmware changes have they made to stop homebrew) Given that they are now advocating Linux, it will be a homebrew heaven that should cause some interesting debates
I,m still undecided, i do want one, but dont want to be part of the "experiance", i want it to play games, not to have to be tied to the thing while it updates itself, or dowloads patches. that was supposed to be the whole selling point of games consoles, "it ran straight from the box"
If Media centres are the way forward, why arnt MS selling loads, they released the concept years ago?
It comes back to the original point i raised, given the ficklety of the technology & the market, A £400 outlay for a lemon is a potentially bitter pill to swallow . MS arnt the only manufacturer to dump a product overninght, when a supposed denied console / unit suddenly appears!
Dont you just love technology

I don't think it comes as any great surprise Sony managed to shift 165,000 units over launch weekend in the UK, especially when you take into account its part of a terratory with an installed user base of over 30m playstation2's
Its been interesting watching close friends - all of whom own playstation2's. (None of them own the old XBOX). In the past, exclusivity meant GTA: San Andreas, MGS, Pro Evo, etc.. only appeared on the Sony platform. These days, most games are converted to both platforms. Throw in the fact XBOX360 is on its 3rd generation graphics, the cost differential, and the choice is no longer the "no brainer" it used to be.
So if that equates to Sony having some real competition this time around, that can only be good news for the consumer.
Which means I'm a step closer to finding that game that will make me rush out and buy either PS3 or XBOX360 (or both!)

Having a more evenly split market is not good for the consumer, it means if you want to get the best out of both platforms it takes more specialist programmers. Which means most non exclusive developers will either hire less capable specialists or have the same guys writing the engine for both platforms and they won't want to write highly optimised code twice in the same amount of time
I would say it's less likely you'll find a "great" game outside of 1st party titles for a while until either market gets big enough to support 3rd party developers risking an exclusive and pushing the machines closer to their limits.
Cheers
Dan
