Why did my phone stop working?

Why did my phone stop working?
Last night? It just refused to make calls or send texts.
This evening I've done the battery and SIM card out reboot and it promptly received a text sent this morning!
Why?
What can I do to stop it doing that? It's not the first time.

I've just had someone who told me that they've totalled their iPhone4 in a wash. This person was due an update, so got to Wrexham this morning and got a new iPhone5S to show for. But she was eyeing the iPhone6, which she can't have now; for another 3 years or so. HA!
BTW, check that phone and get new one.
I started to have the prob like yours with my 3GS. It was the battery worth £120, I found out. In just got the new iPhone5, then.

This is a Samsung Galaxy fame, cheapo, but does the job for me...or it did.
Never been dropped, wet or otherwise abused.
Might try Virgin tomorrow. It wasn't my first choice, they lied that that one wasn't available...but it was, I later found out.
Probably had a job lot of these to get rid of.

Ok, 2 years, then. I got my iPhone5 last year on 2 years contract from Carphone Warehouse. It's with O2. I can't change anything about that signed contract for next 12 months. I can't have 5S unless I pay for the handset, which I won't. So, by the time mine's up for upgrade i.e. end of this fixed contact, I shall be able to upgrade to iPhone6 for nothing.
