Default Best fibre provider?

Looking to go over to fibre,

the big 3 three all have deals, but are they any good?

I want Phone & broadband...

Sky? do they still insist you use there router? (i have a brand new AC job that im loath to get rid of)

BT - walked from them before as they were poor

Plusnet, all i can see is they traffic shape

Anyone got any info on them

Mates that have gone to BT are very happy with service.

I'm on Zen and can't recommend them highly enough, costs more though.

Not sure about Sky re: the router. There may be ways around that though.

Sky, Only seen sky routers on sky fibre,
BT fibre, Sky and Talk Talk all pretty much the same.
But you can connect your laptop/pc directly into the openreach modem on a talk talk fibre line and bypass the router so i'm assuming you might be able to use your own fibre router.
And if the service goes down they are a lot quicker at getting a fibre fault sorted out than normal Adsl.
Bare in mind that fibre still suffers from losses the further away from the fibre cabinet you are but 99/100 you will get a large speed increase.
On BT fibre myself and apart from a dodgy hub4 no problems, hub5 on now and all sweet.
Is there no virgin cable where you are?

And stay clear of plusnet due to their aggressive traffic shaping. You can't download what you want, when you want.

I've gone to sky and got their Hub and wifi extender. There's no speed throttling at peaks times like there is with virgin and you do get full control of the router. I'm happy with the difference and it is noticeable

Never had any bother with PlusNet myself and you can plug your own router into the BT modem. Don't do much downloading now days so wouldn't like to comment regarding the shaping/throttling but don't all ISPs do it in some shape or form. I've also got a server that runs 24/7 so it I were to need to do a large torrent download I'd just throw it over to that an let it get on with it. Wouldn't really matter how long it took.

For me 100% yes. I was getting very decent speeds on ADSL 2 (18 meg) but fibre was still a big improvement. Speeds seem more consistent, I now get 56 down and 15 up which isn't as fast as some but I'm well happy with it.

For me yes. Was getting 2-3Mbps on ADSL now on 20Mbps down / 3Mbps up on FTTC.

Just to clarify when fibre is mentioned most folk mean fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) which is where BT have run fibres from the local exchange to the street side cabinets. The final few hundred meters of the connection is still over twisted pair using ADSL type technology (VDSL2 in fact).

There are some areas where you can get fibre direct to your home, once that final section of twisted pair is taken out of the equation then 100s of Mbps are possible.

It gets more confusing ..

I phoned Zen,, they quoted upto 38MPS would be available (i wanted 76) lol

So i phoned BT who said between 38 -55 mps

Phoned Zen back to discuss, they said BT shouldnt have said between 38-55

So im in a quandry... Zen at upto 38m 12 month contract, or BT 38-55m but an 18month contract..

I switched from sky over to bt.

I've got the home hub 3 with separate white huawei modem which can be over ridden so you can use both LAN ports if you update the software.

My speeds here are a consistent 70meg down / 20meg up, they do vary but by a very slight margin, highest I've seen after installation was 78meg.

Switched provider purposely to get the bt sports no other reason

Same here. I was getting 74 down and 18-20 up and never had any issues with downloading or any traffic shaping.

I've moved house and now back to normal adsl and it's horrendously slow compared to what I was used to. If available I will always take an FTTC deal as it's simply excellent.

New houses are now being built where it's fibre to the home (FTTH) and so this is even better for those lucky enough to have it.
