Syncing short video clips from PC to IPhone

Although most of the short clips are in Quicktime, only some seem to find their way from my laptop (where they play fine) on to either my IPhone or IPad!
Any ideas why?

Use AVPlayer HD or VLC in the app store, you can copy them from iTunes to the app and they'll play most formats
