Cool

If your mates chip is running at 10 degrees (ie below ambient) he had better warm it up or he is going to have condensation problems! He is either talking b0ll0cks or his computers thermistor is not very accurate.

P4's run cooler than Athlons. I have an Athlon 1800+ which runs at 36 idling and up to 41 under full load.

What heatsink do you have?
Are there any case fans?

My 1700+ runs at 46/47, has hit 51 but this is withing the recommended range, mates Duron 1000 runs at 60C+ and is unreliable at that temp, mine seems ok but I may get a better Hs/F

How do you check what temperature your CPU is running at?
Keep having the old Blue screen of death, think it is the CPU over cooking.

newer intel CPUs (i suspose includes P4) will not burn itself out, for example if the CPU fan is faulty and you didnt know about it and keep using the PC.

for amd CPUs, it will just fry it! so NEVER run a amd CPUs without a heatsink/fan!!!

Yeah, the P4's have good speed throttling, which very quickly senses dangerous temparature increases and drops the CPU performance right down accordingly.
