Have an old Mesh P133 at home. Bit slow rendering displays if I have a few windows open (and I normally do - I read one whilst the other downloads via the 56K modem).

Saw a kit to upgrade it to a 400Mhz processor for about £80 in Comet. Sure I can prob get that for £50 elsewhere. Will it give the old beast a new lease of life - maybe make it twice quicker? If so that will do for now on me home PC that's used for Word and browsing only

Fully Understand you dont want fork over £750 to PC world for a new P4 but...

rather than spend £80 (or even £50) on a P133 I'd try and find a second hand PC.

Something like a PII 350 with a 10Gb disk and 64gm ram should be around the £100 mark.

Bumping up the ram will probably have a greater effect.
I hope it can take Dimms not Simms as the latter are getting rather expensive.
Then again, rather than spending £80, a second hand PC might be the way to go. I sold a Dell PII 350 with 128Mb and a 6Gb hard drive to a mate for £150 a few weeks ago.

as for the P133, me too had a P133 notebook but with 64mb. got removable HDD (thinkpad 760) and it will even run windows NT server! a P133 can do everything you want it to do except slower! you are better off buying a used PC than to go for the upgrade. at least you will end up with 2 PCs.

I have got a 128mb simm from a thinkpad 380 so will probably work let me know if ur interested

 

At those speeds the the 2d graphics rendering capabilities are important too. Agree with the other comments, but the VGA card is just as important. Being a P133, It is extremely unlikely that you have an AGP port, unless you are running a Super Socket7 board, which was out a couple of years later than your chip.

Those 'Speedjump' cpu's RARELY give out anything resembling the performance that they say in the box, so be warned.

 

everything is relative to the speed of your components. just imagine if you are changing the CPU and the CPU is a turbo boxer engine and the rest of the PC component is a skoda (pre VW!).

so the engine can do 0-60 in 6 seconds but the rest of the car cant! your best bet is to source for a used PC. check the "for sales" section and you can end up a better and faster PC than those "upgrade" options.

I am actually handy with a soldering iron (best in college year ) so can I lift the existing HDD and drop it in as a, say, D: in any new mainframe? This way I keep all me files and stuff. Have there been differences in how these drives work over the years, and will a more modern 'mainframe' actually talk to me old transplanted fella?

if by "Mainframe" - you mean new case/mothorboard/cpu etc then yes.

All newer IDE interfaces are backwards comaptible with older IDE drives (no soldering reqd!)

OMG, don't whack in your old drive from your old machine, unless you are going to transfer data from it. You could use is a file dump, but under no circumstances use it for your OS. It will be a major, major bottleneck in a new machine if you do use it for your OS.

 

If I slap the old C HDD in as a D drive on the 'new computer' the OS should boot up from the existing (new) C no? Supose I could then delete the Win 95 folder (keeping me media) on the old drive to avoid any conflict?

I know it propably won't work first time, but there's always Scoobynet to come cryiing to, and i'm willing to try it, as a novice!

Appreciayte the advice - so finally where could I pick up a PC like this - something a bit younger than mine.

 

Just for info.....

Make sure that the old drive is setup up as a slave and the new one as a master...

You should be able to set this via the HDD jumpers.
