SSD HDD
I have just upgraded my 6 year old laptop's hard drive to SSD
Bloody hell its like I've got the latest best specification laptop going, it absolutely motors, very little lag on boot and programs open instantly.
I think Ill stay on Xp pro for sometime, now I have managed to clone my hard drive

I built a new pc a few months ago and put a SSD in it, its the best piece of hardware in the pc. I will never have a pc without an SSD again 
The speed differences are just crazy. Much bigger performance increase than any other part.

Converted both my MacBook Pro and my synths..... Big difference!
Still record audio onto a regular drive. SSD read/write amounts still aren't as good as regular HDD yet.

The right choice (as always 
) depends on how much you want to spend and what you expect from the SDD. The mentioned 840pro/evo and Vertex drives are all pretty good in performance. With the 840 pro being probably the fastest and with lowest power consumption and the evo the "slowest". If you have a lot of random reads/writes (antivirus, browsing, word processing etc.) that is. If you are loading big chunks of data, all these are quite the same.
If you need reliability instead of speed, certain Intel drives are still considered the best due to their "backup chip", which is used if parts of the other memory chips fail.
Another mentionable choice, if available, is maybe the Mushkin Chronos Deluxe. Quite good performance for a reasonable price (I'm using one myself for over 1 1/2 years now).
Anyways, the difference between SSDs is not as noticable as going from HDDs to SSDs. It's just good to have one
