Agree with Fig - why spend £50 - £100 a point when you can do it yourself for £5 - £10 (& OK, you might have to get your hands a bit dirty )

Dunk..... strangly enough I've already got a 10/100 Switch at home...

Guys, I know how to do it, and I agree that it would be cheaper but I'd rather get someone who does it all the time 'cos I want to run Cat5e using Gigabit over copper so it needs to be done right.....

Jeff,

Do it yerself. We added some more cat 5e to part of the office and currently run Gigabit over it. You don't do anything differently that you would for 100Mb.

Just make sure you get decent connectors/faceplates/patch panels, etc. that are guaranteed to run at that speed.

I hadn't cabled in 5 years, but helped the network lads lay cable and terminate the ends. Out of 200 points, we had two failures and that was down to the wires getting cut on the sharp edges of the floorboxes.

Gigabit at Home

Dare we ask what you have that needs Gig ?

I've recently added some Cat 5 at home and just borrowed a cable tester from work which showed the odd dodgy punched down pair.

Unless your house is pushing the limits (90m runs ? )) I would have thought, if you can arrange a tester, you'd be ok.
