How do you find out the RPM of your hard drive?

Buy a stopwatch, a piece of chalk and a screwdriver.
Take top off disk, draw a big fat line along one side of the platter. Switch drive on, and count how long (using stopwatch) it takes for the line to go round in circles. Easy.
Or get the S/N and ask the manufacturer.

Or else buy the fastest drive and it should throttle back if the other disks are slower than it. Obviously if you buy a slower disk that the others, the whole array will be throttled back.
(I've only worked with Dell arrays so can't comment for other manufacturers but I should imagine this would hold true for them too.)
