Im thinking of getting the smart cover for my ipad but Im unsure if they offer enough drop protection? What is a good choice of case that still keeps the slim size.

They don't offer any real drop protection. I've had my iPad close to two years with smart cover and it's nearly perfect front and back, daily use and lots of travel. I haven't dropped it onto the floor though. the Smart Case would offer more protection.

Bloody hell how good is the Smart Cover? I have used an android tablet for years and only decided on an iPad after getting the missus an iPad. It's so wierd that it goes to sleep once closed and wakes up when you lift it.

I decided just to have the Smart Cover and buy a cheap case to cover it while carrying as its doubtful I will drop it while holding it?

One thing to watch out for is holding the weight of the iPad with the cover, it's really comfortable in Portrait when the cover is a triangle, but wears the hinge at least on the leather one.

The problem with the smart cover is that it doesn't really offer any protection at all apart from the screen. It looks great, but I bought a full leather-type case in the end. It still has a magnet in the front so when you open it the iPad comes on.

I've got a leather effect case on mine too.
I've dropped mine a couple of times, only onto carpet but its still mint.

I've also put a screen protector on mine, simply because I wanted an anti glare one for sitting in the garden using it in summer, on the odd day we get some sun.
