Cheap NAS Drive
Hi guys.
Currently my home audio and video is all hooked up to my Onkyo tx nr509 av receiver. I love it, but there is one thing missing....and that is playing all the media I have acquired though the years.
I can plug any of my iPods in through the USB port, but majority of my music is either on CD, an old external hard drive or on my dying 6 year old laptop.
I know I can just get a big external hard drive, but I want one that will plug into my router, and also be able to accept torrents even when he laptop is off.
My av receiver is dnla compliant.
Any ideas?
Cheers.

My router is a standard item from my Internet provider. Yes, the router is wired to the av receiver. I can play music wirelessly with my android etc...I can even control it with my Samsung Galaxy.

I was wondering what model your router is to see if it would take a USB hard drive, although accepting torrents isn't something I've done I think you can with DD-WRT firmware on some routers.
You may find NAS price vs performance very disappointing, compared with a PC or server on your network, but that might not matter for audio.

I live in a flat for now, so I want to be minimalist if I can help it..especially with a 15 month old daughter who already knows her way round my iPad lol
The router is a Technicolor TG582n. There is a USB port.

whats your budget / space requirements?
There are a few around depending on the above. A lot these days come with some sort of torrent software installed..
Otherwise there are options like getting something like a HP Microserver and setting it up how you want.

Budget is as low as possible. A 1tb drive will be sufficient for us...for now. We still quite like our DVDs so there is no point ripping them onto hard drive.
When we sell this flat and get our first house, I will revisit the situation again.
Also guys, you will have to dumb it down a bit for me - ie the technical terms and abbreviations.

Another vote for the WD live the 3tb is 140 quid and worth it for the extra cash. Hardwire it to router and they run fine.
Next step up is the net gear duo or wd live duo

That router is listed as only having 100MBps ports which will cap the sustained transfer rate of anything plugged into it to about 1/10 of that of a typical 7200 RPM desktop hard drive can manage attached directly to a computer or through a cheap mini server or old PC on a gigabit network. Cheap NAS setups seem to be up to double that speed, but still 5 times slower than what is easily possible with cheap equipment. Granted, all this is academic if you are just streaming music (and to a large degree much compressed video) and value space, child safety and convenience, but expect disappointment if you later use this network and NAS to fling large files around on.

Thanks, John.
I forgot to mention I also want HDMI and optical/coaxial sound output direct to the AV receiver.
I will just save, and sell my old NES with games and gun etc to raise some funds to buy a proper set up once and for all.
Cheers guys.

If you are gonna buy a small form factor pc to use as a Home Theatre system, http://uniprice.co/asrock-ion-3d-152..._campaign=Prod would probably be your best bet as it will support 3dtv if you upgrade your tv later, and still a very reasonable price.
I Built my own which streams from my NAS via a 200mbps powerline adaptor but it is Gigabit ethernet on the router side/desktop side. Uses a Silverstone GD-01MX case and http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...mcs3=KB-006-XB as well as a normal Media Centre remote. TBH I would buy the Asrock now if I was doing again as it uses a fraction of the electricity, and will almost certainly be quieter.

Nas's don't have hdmi or audio connections. What you need is a media player
