Can someone recommend an ADSL provider. Only know about the BT one so want to measure up the others. Tried going onto NTL but they don't cater for our property as we are on a private road.

Cheers

If you haven't alread been there, take a look at ADSLguide.org.uk. They've got info on all the providers.

Edited 'cos I got the URL wrong

I am in a similar position, and currently looking for an ADSL provider. Was going to go with Pipex, but they seem to be getting a lot of new reg's so may struggle with capacity soon. Also considering Demon, Zen and Nildram.

Nildram is expensive but the customer service is supposed to be excellent.

Demon's service is good, but their billing dept couldn't manage a **** up in a brewery. ( I've been with them for years )

Heard some good things about Eclipse...

Try Luna Internet (www.luna.co.uk) packages from £35 per month, less congested backbone than BT which means faster surfing.

Oh, and I am affiliated with the comapany and therefore may be biased, but we are good!

Cheers for all the info guys. I have been told that BT's service is a bit iffy. Gonna phone around.

I've got BTOpenworld's plug and go for £29.99 a month and it's frigging excellent. I get the maximum sustained download speeds all day every day and I have never had a problem with the service. Mind you I live in Greater London so it may be different elsewhere!

go for pipex as they are giving away the free adsl modem and also free setup fees. i know some people had problems with pipex but i am sure a big company like them will address those issues. they have been in the internet business for ages so i would say they are reliable.

That is true, but because they are offering such a good deal, there are hundreds of people signing up for Pipex.

Word on the street is that they may not be able to cope with all the new business and hence will struggle to support.

So whats the difference between one of the other ISPs and BT - I thought they all bought the BT package and resold it under their name.

What exactly is different between say Demon's 29.99 a month ADSL deal and BT OpenWorld's ?

i was looking into adsl, and IMHO my list is down to (not in order)...

pipex - good value for a main stream ISP but service might suffer because of demand (remember when freeserve first came into the market and lots of people were having problems?). i am sure they will sort it out in time.

freedom2surf - another good value ISP but speed *might* be an issue. they are in the process of getting a bigger pipe.

plus.net - so far so good. good and speedy service.

to consider - nildram and eclipse.

Same as you - I did some research last night and am now deciding between those providers.

Plusnet are looking good at the moment.

Guys

Have decided to go with Pipex as they are swopping modems & giving free connection. So all that i'll be paying is £24 per month.

Dreamweaver,

i am currently connected using a phone line extension that is split between phone & internet, while the original point is also split to a phone & my extension. Any ideas how many filters i need for this???

Not sure TBH Bob. I would say 2 at a guess. That would be 1 in the main socket which splits off to the main phone, and then the scond extension. Then one at the end of the 2nd extension which again splits.

Or you could get 3 and have one as a spare for future ref - they are only £9.99 each so better to be safe than sorry.

You'll need a filter on each extension in the house....

All ordered - Bob, keep me posted on how it goes for you with activation date, install etc etc.

Have to try and find an old external modem now to exchange - fairly sure I left one at my folks house when i moved out

When i spoke to them yesterday, they said activation takes roughly 10 days. However, you cannot use it until you get your modem. So depending on when you send it off, they said it would take anything upto 20 days!!! So that means we pay for the period until we get the adsl modem.
