This will test you lot .....
I have an old desktop - about 10 years old now, running XP.
Not been too much of a problem, it's a Medion ... I like Medions, they give you what you really need and don't charge an arm and a leg.
Anyway .... a few weeks ago it would bleep at me when it turned on ... but, it still ran fine.
Now, I turn it on - windows XP loads and the welcome log-in screen appears ..... no problem, BUT - the mouse won't work!!
The keyboard works so I can log on using that, once into my account the keyboard works still - but not the mouse.
I decide to power up in Safe Mode .... F1 .... that I do and want to use the keyboard arrows to move up and down the options - but the keyboard won't work in safe mode!!!
It's driving me bonkers ... any ideas - I know you lot are really smart about things like this!

Pete,
As Jack suggests, try a new/different mouse. Ditto with the keyboard.
Try via PS/2 and USB - both for the mouse and keyboard.
Go to the windows device manager and see if there are any errors.
Have a check of the Event Viewer
Also try Control Panel/Mouse (and) Keyboard in case of errors.

Cheers for the responses .... it uses a PS2 mouse and a USB Keyboard .... never heard of a mouse failing before, but suppose it could happen? I've taken the mouse apart - nothing obviously wrong.
I don't have a spare mouse .... I'll buy one from the £shop or something.
I cannot do anything without the mouse to navigate so cannot look at the device drivers etc. ..... and in Safe Mode the Keyboard doesn't even work!

plug the usb mouse in, do a restart and make sure its a powered usb port.
when it comes on move the mouse for 3-4 mins, if it doesn't work you will def need the drivers.

I wish the OP would give up the ghost
Pete have you tried the mouse in a different USB port just to eliminate a failed USB port as opposed to the mouse failing?
10 years old? What is the spec and what operating system is it running.

If you haven't already bought a new mouse yet, try enabling 'mouse-keys' in Control Panel -> Accessibility.
To get there:
ctrl-esc or Windows key to bring up Start menu, then up/down/side arrows and Enter key to navigate around the menu/windows and 'click' on stuff.

Your keyboard is USB and probably wont work in safe mode unless your bios is set to enable USB legacy keyboard support, the irony is that you need a ps2 keyboard to get into the bios to change this setting.
The mouse failure just sounds like a mouse failure plain and simple. A replacement should fix it, mouse failures are very common.

I think the clue is in the POST boot up and the beeping. As someone posted has the CMOS battery been replaced being a 10 year PC the battery? The battery keeps the BIOS settings in check when you power off the PC.
If memory serves me, the older PCs of the day had a lot of options in the BIOS for PS/2 and USB Keyboard and Mouse support. Worth going into the BIOS/Settings and checking these as well, as if the CMOS battery has failed the PC Beeping (twice is it?) would indicate settings being reset due to this. If a PC beeps more than once then POST (Power On Self Test) at the beginning is telling you there is an issue.

As above - the first step is to identify the BIOS error beep code. For this we need to know the BIOS manufacturer (it says on the splash screen: Award, AMI etc) and the exact number and type of beeps (long, short etc).
If the OP doesnt provide this then I wouldnt bother replying further.

Right ...... I have another mouse, still doesn't work.
Used the windows key to go into msconfig .... there I told it to load basic drivers, it restarted, still no luck.
Now, I seem to be in a loop with this msconfig ... if I do anything with it it restarts each time!
It won't go into safe mode either on start up ....... I don't think the keyboard is operable until windows starts!
I really don't know what to do next.
Using the windows key I have entered the control panel - but, without a mouse I can't do anything useful ........... the arrow keys will only let you do very limited things.
Any advice? I would love just to restore it to an earlier time and I think my problems would solve themselves ..... but, although I can get into the help and support menu I cannot navigate around them without the mouse!
As someone has said it looks like the BIOS has lost the basic drivers somehow ...... but, if I can't get into safe mode then I'm knackered, am I?

the keyboard should work on boot USB or PS2, due to the fact you may need to enter the bios and tinker.
I think you have 2 choices, Backup your box and flatten it, or buy a new tower PS2 is so old its prob worth a change Mr P
Look at Chillblast they can do a nice sub 300 quid box for you,
Happy to have a look if your near leeds for a MacDonald's

I've tried two mouses ... wiggled the pins, pushed in hard, looked at the motherboard (I'm wondering if the connections to the PCB are OK ... but cannot see under the PCB).
In XP in Device Manager does it normally have "Mouse and other pointing devices" or something like those words? Those are the words in Vista ..... my PC hasn't got those words. Anyone have an XP machine who can see what it says?

calm down grandad
get your self one of these
take your HHD out of you knackered machine, connect to above and then use the usb connector to attach to a new machine (it will simply see it as a new USB device)
and just copy any data over (

I'm not sure a new battery will cure the fault (although, I accept that it may have caused it).

Galifrey's would work too -- but less flexible imo
I am guessing the drive will be under 20gb in size -- a new Laptop will have at least a couple of hundred GB

yep, that is big
so it might be worth considering Galifrey's solution
purely because at 80gb it might be still worth using as a semi perm external drive
I have loads of 5 to 20GB drives that are sort of useless -- but i use the sharkoon solution for ad-hoc data retrieval

OK, thanks to all for their help.
I have just added a USB Trackerball, windows located it and installed it.
This Trackerball works ... so, have a mouse back!
Plugged in my old mouse and restarted .... the PC just hung there, windows didn't load.
This would point to the Mouse socket on the MotherBoard being suspect? I have used two mice, both don't work.
It could be a motherboard issue?
Another thing ...... I tried to restore the PC to an earlier time - say, 2 months ago to remove all questions of a software issue ...... there is no restore points before this week!!!!!! Why would that be??
