Question Broadband speed slow

As above we have just taken up a Virgin media 60meg internet package, but when i have done a speedtest on various sites i'm getting a max of about 28 meg. Now i'm running a home plug 200meg network so that should be ok for the job on XP. On our wireless laptop on windows 7 again im getting more or less the same.
Now the engineer from Virgin came round and and on his notebook got 62 meg wired and 50 meg wireless, which doesnt supprise me as the exchange is about 30 metres away.
What the engineer said was that there is possably something "blocking" the laptop, and there is something wrong with the PC on the home plugs operating system.
So can anyone shed some light on the problems?

Cheers in advance

Is your wireless N? If its G that will be limiting it.

Easy way to find if your butt plugs are causing a problem..... just wire a CAT5 cable from your router to your PC and re-run the speedtest.

CAT5 is the way..... those home plugs are ****e for a connection of your magnitude.

I have just tried a Netgear wireless N usb dongle and its even worse, 17meg I plugged the laptop in with a short cat 5 cable and it was better at about 37 meg, still a long way off the 60meg the "engineer" got
would a 500 home plug get closer to the 60 meg?
cheers

After a quick google I see you can get 1000 home plug would that cope with a 60meg line?

Cheers again.

First thing to do is login to your router's diag page and see what its line-sync speed is. If the router's only getting 28Mbps at the phone socket, you're wasting your time getting new home plugs or installing CAT5. If it's getting a lot more than that, obviously you need to improve the in-house LAN.

As said above, you now need to find out your sync speed. I don't know anything about Virgin cable systems, so don't know if your modem shows line stats. Not all do!

Just so we're clear on this though.....

Did you plug the CAT5 cable into the modem/router and then into your laptop to get 37Mb?

OK... so you need to find out your sync speed and post your results.

As you can probably guess Shaun I'm not that technical, so I have no idea what you mean with sync speed

How exactly did the Virgin engineer test i.e. did he hook his laptop directly to your router (assuming its one they provided)? And what did he test to - speedtest or some internal Virgin test app?

If your getting same speeds direct on the router then its clearly not your homeplugs causing the lower speed.

Excuse my ignorance.....

Are you saying that as it's cable then sync speeds are gauranteed regardless (assuming a connection is made)?

If that's the case, it's the first time I've heard that and this guys issue with speed on a cable network certainly is not isolated.

Willing to be educated of course.

Probably a handheld device I would presume.

OK mate... well you have done the basic test of excluding your home hubs as the issue. It suggests it could be your modem/router or your provider network.

I would log a call with Virgin. Tell them what you have tested and the results you have acheived.

I spoke to my old next door neighbour who's a techie and he surguested updating the drivers on my computer as they may not be upto the job.
When the guy from Virgin came round I was at work so it was my wife that spoke to him but she said that he used his own laptop/notebook to do the tests on the modem/router and got 62meg wired and 50 on wifi.

Drivers!?!? You say he is a techie... a techie in what? lol

If you haven't put a lottery ticket on for the euromillions, you best do it now.... you'll have more chance of winning that, than it being a drivers issue imo.

it wont be the modem if virgin have tested it, when you speed test on the laptop with the cat 5 you're turning off the wifi right?

can you post your speed test img file?

easist way to test is dload from newsgroups, Even the speedtest doesnt represent your actual speeds.
Im on 100mb and my result sometimes comes back as 35mg or 68 meg, But when i get into newsgroups i actually get 12.2 meg a second. which is what i expect. play about.

As for wireless, if its the superhub it isnt really great, but on 54G u max at about 3 to 5 meg and pre N 8 to 9. I actually sacked off the superhub, and put it into Modem Only mode and hooked up a Linksys router which was 1000 times better

Cool

Thats a bit better
Decided to reinstal windows, did a speed test and it was no better so i took the desktop pc down to the hub and connected it straight to the router. I also instaled a program called TCP optimizer as a guy at Virgin recomended it for XP.

Thanks for all the advice and help
