Question

Got a customer’s server room starting to pile up with old dot matrix printers, 14” monitors that are on their last legs and assorted other bits of old & unwanted kit.

Where can you bin this sort of stuff? I guess you can’t just nip down the council tip and chuck it as it’s classed as business waste?

Suggestions would be very helpful.

TIA,

Chris.

Hi Chris.

You are largely correct in assuming you cannot dump this at the local tip.

Otherwise, disposal depends on the quantity involved. We dump odd bits in the skip, but I know of at least one company that deals with disposal of obsolete equipment if in sufficient quantities.

Environmental issues need to be considered too.

You could either sell them on ebay as a job lott or give them to a charity you could try the local council for their advice....there is a charirty call "recycle i.t" they train up homeless and the unemployed...worth a go i suppose. Better than dumping it into the environment !!!

Wink

When we wanted to get rid of some kit we'd just stopped using, we contacted the Science Museum

Watch out, if you give it to charity the liability will still lie with your customer. We decided that it wasn't worth the risk and hence sell old kit to 2nd hand computer dealers - the proceeds go toward IT toys/nights out

Although I guess they could "sell" the kit for £0.01 to transfer the liability??!?!??!
