Which i7?
Looking to retire my current q6600 based pc as a vmware esxi server, so I'm on the lookout to build a new pc.
Going to reuse my 5850 from it but get another to run crossfire (can pick one up for £130 which will give better performance than a single new card for double that?).
So the question is to future proof which i7 should I go for budget around £200. (not one of the £500-£800 extreme editions!).
Looking at the prices and specs here the i7 2700K or 3820 seem to the the area I'm looking at.
Or is there an i7 CPU thats superb for less like the old G0 Q6600 that I should be looking at?

I suppose the first question is, are you going to overclock?
The i5 sandy bridge out now is plenty good enough. You can run that at 4.5GHz whilst air cooled so it seems daft going for the i7 unless you will really make use of the extra cores. At which point you pretty much double the cost of the i7 for a hex core.

Overclocking - yes I will, probably not to the limits but a reasonable overclock. So far it seems that the performance between the 2700 and 3820 are almost identical, the 2700 is *slightly* more overclockable, but the 3820 gives access to the new 2011 platform for potential future upgrades.... Only other note is that mobos cost more for the 3820.

2x5850's in Crossfire. Intended use is gaming, photoshop type stuff, re-encoding possibly and general day to day ms office etc.

I think I agree for the price you want to spend, but something in my head says it restricts the PCIE bus far more than the 2600 series, and you need bandwidth for those two cards...I advise you research that fact and prove i am talking rubbish before clicking "buy it now", I just cant remember and am slipping on here from work so cant research it for you at the moment mate, sorry.

BF3 is game of the moment too!!
Must say, seen some interesting mobo deals around for the 3930K which are VERY tempting

Having done a bit more research I think the sensible thing to do is hold off a month. The new Ivy Bridge processors are due out end of next month so see and wait what happens when they come out.....

That just pushes the current CPU's down in price.... it's the MoBo's that are up-spec'd to add to the cost.
i7 2600K is my next choice too, but unless you buy two PCI-E3.0 graphics cards, then you won't need the pricey brand new stuff, IMHO.
