The spooler is probably crashing and the registry is probably a bit messed up in the printer area. Try removing all printer software, remove all printer drivers, do a reg clean and reinstall the printers. Failing that, its a OS reinstall....

When you say "the software" do you mean the actual printers disappeared (which they will probably do if the print spooler service is stopped) or the actual software itself - in your programs list for eg?
Duff/corrupt printer drivers can stop the print spooler service from running and in turn clear your printers.
If it was the actual software which went, does anyone else use your PC? Could someone have ran a restore on it which took the machine back to a previous point in time before the software was installed???
