Repair or a new laptop?
My father has an Acer Aspire laptop, model is something like 57XX. Both USB ports on it are broken, the plastic portion inside the ports has broken off, so they are non functional.
I'm guessing a motherboard replacement is going to be required. Does anyone know what the rough cost of this would be, and where, in the Kent area would be best to get this done (PC World / Curry's spring to mind, and they both have very local stores to him, but I'm slightly wary about them).
Depending on the cost, I'm wondering if simply getting a new laptop would be best, in which case, where would be the best place to get a sub £299 laptop be (online or in a real world store), and it will be Windows based (Yes, I know, but let us not go there )

Replacing the motherboard will end out costing as much as a new laptop.
Best way to get a new laptop is to go to PC World and play with a few and find out which one you like. Then search online for the best price.

I paid to get my daughters laptop repaired before christmas as it was £120 for the repair to an Acer laptop and that was picked up and delivered back to me. A similar spec laptop would of cost me £350 so it was a no brainer. The company installs new motherboards for a fixed £99 plus delivery costs for any make of laptop.

Depends how old the broken laptop is and how it compares in specs to what you could get for £299. Repairing via PCWorld will be outrageously expensive so best to get quotes from independent IT companies who undertake hardware repairs.

Think the lappy is about 18 months old, so it's not exactly a shocking old bit of kit and for what my father uses it for it's more than adequate.

the usb ports may be on a separate board connected to the motherboard via a cable and connector, if so then that board could be replaced if you can get the part number, or possibly a few drops of superglue into the usb port and stick the plastic bits back on again after straightening the internal pins if needbe

I did have a very quick look online at a replacement motherboard and the usb ports are soldered directly onto the board
Superglue approach might be worth looking at, but think the broken bits have been thrown out.

£1.93 got to be worth an attempt with a soldering iron!
Failing that, take out the motherboard, take it to a electronics place and have them solder it, should be a few quid for literally a few mins work

Anyhoo, how the hell do you break a USB port? I've never ever seen one fail yet
