Default Iphone Guru/Expert needed please

Hi I'm after some help with an Iphone I am looking at for my friends son.

Iphone 3GS 16gig

Has the following problem,

When switched on it shows connect to Itunes.
The PC does no recognise the device
I Tunes does not recognise the device

History of the phone is that my friends son updated it to iso5 and then tried to jailbreak the phone causing the issue. I have done some reasearch on the tinternet and believe the issue is some of the registry files are missing. They reccomend using redsnow to restore the phone which I have tried but to no avail, instructions say the phone needs to be switched off to start the process but as soon as you plug the phone into the usb it boots to the connect screen and will not switch off to start to process.

So far I am pulling my hair out so anyone have any suggestions to fix or can reccomend someone I can send it to for them to fix it.

Thanks and no this is not another android vs iphone thread.

Firstly your best best is putting the phone into DFU mode , this will let iTunes detect the phone.

You can google how to get the phone into
DFU mode, then that should sort it

Hold the power and home buttons constantly until you get a screen with a USB cable on it, then iTunes will recognise it.

That's not DFU mode Ron that's just basic recovery, DFU will be a blank screen and iTunes will say its recognised it

I'm not sure apple would help either as the op states the fault occurred due to an attempt at jail breaking.
