Samsung Galaxy S2 - What do I need!
Finally decided to stop living in the dark ages and ordered the above Android beasty to replace my HTC Touch HD running Windows Mobile.
So what are the essential apps I should be looking to download this evening aside from Angry Birds
See that there is an app to control my Panasonic TV via wi-fi so that should be pretty cool

I got one of these a couple of weeks back and it soooooo much nicer than the Samsung Tocco Ultra I had previously.
So far I've got these Apps:
Battery Checker
London Tube Map (I work in London)....
BBC & Sky News/Sports
Flashlight
Yahoo Mobile
Ebay
Pricegrabber
CamScanner
CamCard
Groupon
Google Translate
F1.Com2011
& Wi-fi Finder
All of the above were FREE apps, apart from the downloading, which is nice………
Definately recommend getting spare batteries though...

BBC IPlayer
Handcent
Asphalt 6 - was free via the Samsung market
Fatbooth - this is a hoot
Beautiful widgets - follow below link to get it free

The Galaxy S2 already has Swype installed as a keyboard option - it's very good to use.

How does it compare to other brands with similar phones? I had a Tocco Ultra years ago and thought it was p*ss poor. Had to get rid of it. Worst phone I've ever had, and has put me off Samsungs in a big way. This one seems to be quite popular though?

My Galaxy S2 has BBC Iplayer pre installed.
I installed widgets onto the front screen to turn wifi on and off also a silent on/off button which are very useful.
I've installed an app called Zedge which is for free ringones, works very well so far.

First impressions SuperAMOLED screen is utterly superb (and huge!), excellent touch screen though coming from one with a resistive job it's a revolution. All the gadgets you could want for (GPS, Compass, Gyro, Accelerometer, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth etc.). Excellent app support via the Android marketplace.
Only had it a day and I'm converted, so much stuff to play with I feel like I've only just scratched the surface

Have alook at XDA developers, they do some good reccomendations via the news pages...
Two good ones ive found
llama - neat little app, you get it to learn your locations and set events based on variables... ie when you wake up it turns from quiet to loud, activates wifi etc.
lots of variables to play with make this a very clever app
Tinyshark - groove shark on your device
ZDbox - all in one app for task killing - battery management - app storage etc
IMS - alternative to allshare- media streaming app
Voodoo control app - audio and operatis system enhancements
Some good apps finally appearing, just as im looking at going blackberry lol

Has anyone loaded any virus software?
I've been reading articles today about smartphones being targeted again and I was thinking of trying the Mcafee app as i use that on my netbook.
Whats peoples thoughts?

Just to add, shouldn't your phone be running Gingerbread 2.3.5 now?

I didn't know a lot either, but I read up a lot before I did it. It allows you to remove things and also allows certain apps root access. You can get free wi fi tethering, speed up your processor along with various other things. There is masses of info and things you can do when rooted, there are also lots of different roms too. Here is a link to the site I used to root mine. Obviously XDA developers is the main site with lots of info.

I got 2.3.5 yesterday ( via Kies ) on Three.. No problems so far. One huge noticeable difference is the battery life increase. 18hrs on the battery so far and the battery icon has barely emptied.

Llama is damn' useful
https://market.android.com/details?i...ab.Llama&hl=en
Lets you define where you are and what is switched on / off when you are there.
E.g. when I'm at home / work I have the wireless on / bluetooth off, but when driving - the other way 'round. I do the same with keyguard, off at home but on when away.
Plus you can set it to silent mode when you are at home during the night, or all sorts of variations. It's obviously very good as a battery saver but it allows you to define multiple options purely dependent on where and when you are.
