If your Air support USB 3.0 i would go with USB 3.0 external HDD/SSD,but still if your Air doesn't support USB 3.0,you will be limited by speed of Firewire(50mb/s) and USB 2.0(20-44mb/s,technically can do up to 60mb/s)

Its mainly depends for what you are looking,if you are looking just extend your current storage,i would go with external HDD,SSD is expensive, but in my view speed will be killed by USB 2.0 or FW.Due this i would have look what you have,i mean USB 3.0,FW or USB 2.0

Price for Thunderbolt its too much with comparison USB 3.0 which is twice slower 5GB/s but still fast enough for user like is Trout and others.

Thunderbolt i would use in studio, when you are using this for realtime recording, graphic and video production,in real life its useless and mainly its costly

£300 for 1TB HDD,2TB for £400 from LaCie seems step too far.

I should have been clearer on spec and usage.

I want light and robust - I travel a lot (planes, trains and automobiles) and I don't want to carry too much stuff.

It will primarily for keeping archive material and video material offline until needed.

My main day to day work will be in the main SSD on the Air.

Great portable hdd(not SSD) are WD Passport 1TB series and cost around from £60-£80 are great,my brother using this

For SSD you must pay extra and not sure if its worth due, your Air have USB 2.0 and FW800 and mainly are not available in bigger sizes for good money(256GB portable SSD HDD cost around £490)

Air does not have FW it has USB 2.0 and Thunderbolt.

I am concerned about HDD as I am not sure how robust, and I assume heavier?

I will have a look see however - see what Thunderbolt devices there are.

Portable Thundelbolt HDD are not available i'm afraid, hope so in few months this will be available from few companies like Seagate,WD,OCZ etc.,but at moment above mentioned LaCie

I've used before WD Passport series on my ex-Apple MBP,when i've been on trips and this HDD has been best in my view, not fastest but OK.

If you have just USB 2.0,SSD will be waste, because USB can't transfer more than above mentioned 60mbps,for this will be enough good any standard WD,LaCie etc.

If you are looking for shock/robust HDD out there are few discs, but any above mentioned HDD will do same job as these.

Another option is make your own. I am currently using a Runcore USB external enclosure with a mini pci-e runcore SSD @ 128GB. Does the job nicely.
