Let me tell you a story.....

Windows NT4.0

Upgraded to SP6a (from sp5) and IE6.0 (from 4.0)

Updated the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine JVM from 4.7 to 5.00.2085

Now Access97 will not start - it comes up with

! DISK OR NETWORK ERROR - OK

upon clicking OK it then comes up with the standard, This prog does not have enough memory to run blah blah try shutting progs blah.

So I embark upon a re-install over the top from the Office 97 CD - I select the Re-Install all compenents to restore missing files and settings......this has an error 3/4's of the way through:-

WORKGROUP ADMINISTRATOR
! AN ERROR HAS OCCURED AT CHANGING WORKGROUP DATABASE - OK

Click OK

! SETUP COULD NOT CREATE A SYSTEM.MDW FILE
AFTER SETUP REBOOT YOUR COMPUTER THEN RUN THE WORKGROUP ADMINISTRATOR.

So I rebooted, checked the System32 folder - SYSTEM.MDW was already there. Tried renaming it - it wouldnt make a new one.....neither could I join it.

I copied system.mdw off another machine...it would let me join that one but I still get the error on a re-install.

So anybody any ideas? - If you delete the system.mdw file and try to start access it just says it needs it to start.

I think the workgroup stuff is totally fooked......

we dont even use the workgroup stuff anyway!

TIA

p.s IE6 wont print whats on the webpage either! (another issue!)

The mdw is essentially an access database, I know that the common controls that come with IE6 can do a lot of damage to VB6 e.t.c, but I cant remember if IE6 installs MDAC2.7 or not, try going to MicrosoftMDAC and downloading MDAC component checker to see what version you are running.....*thinking aloud ...but it should still work ok (BW compatibility)

hmmmm - get any error numbers...

Id say same as crispin... and also try remove office, del all office registry keys.., del mdw file or rename if still exists, reapply sp6a just to be on safe side.. reinstall office... and should work, otherwise start looking to blame jre / jvm.
