After a lot of evaluation I have ordered an iPad 2 (and yes I've tried an iPad 2 against a Galaxy 10.1) but now I need to find a way of protecting the case / back cover and screen.
What can you recommend to do the job? I'm hoping for one product to be able to perform all the requirements, I don't like the official Apple cover either.

Poundland sell all the above for................................... a pound !!!
just fitted a screen protector to my 10" Advent vega after a little trimming and must admitt compared to the official £9.99 curries one its just as good !!
have heard off plenty folk ruining the screen protector when fitting especially on something this size so at a quid each its worth a go and cheap enough to buy again should you make a mess off fitting !!
they also do a little small metal stand that can hold the tablet both ways, again at a pound its great.
worth a look before spending anything " apple " priced !!

Thanks for the suggestions but I really want a case that covers the front and back panels, there are so many different models on the market it's hard to make a choice.
The Apple store usually has a large selection you can try out, I'm going commando on the back with a leather smart cover, so far all good.
www.tuaw.com or www.engadget.com often do case reviews.

I've ordered an Otterbox Defender, it gets good reviews and does what I need it to do.

Not the cheapest or most expensive case but I've had an Otterbox cover on my iPhone 3G previously and found it really good, I'm not bothered about them being a little chunky as long as it does it's job.
