They are designed for system builders, and are just a copy of the OS, identical to the full retail version. However, they come with several limitations:
* Once installed on one computer it can never be installed on another machine, nor are you permitted to replace the motherboard.
* You receive no technical support from Microsoft.
* You can only perform a clean installation of the OS, not an upgrade.

So it depends what you want it for.

looks like it will prob be best to go for the full retail version then, just in case.

I have just found out that my win 7 ultimate is a non gen copy after 5 months of use

Not strictly true; although it may vary with OS versions. And teh small print does say alot. In practice it doesn't seem too fussy:

I've swapped motherboard and its fine (upgraded when I found my old board's chipset didn't support memory addressing above 3.5gig, despite it saying it could take 4gig on the box ).

Also swapped boards and a system with reinstalling the OS and it didn't even blink an eye. Also since reinstalled OSs on new boards, and its activated fine.

Installing on a new Hard drive on the other hand has posed issues; On installation it rejeted the online activation. So I had to phone MS and speak to a nice foriegn lady to explain the reason for the new HD was because the old one failed and I replaced it with a different drive as the faulty one was no longer stocked (plus I was rather unimpressed with a drive that died after a month of use).

In other words online updates has detected your install has been used on another computer somewhere (i.e they've detected the activation code has been used on two different spec PCs within a 6 month window, for example when you loaned a genuine install disc with its activation key to a mate to fix his PC who inadvertantly does a full install).

If you have the box with the activation code or the sticker on the case of the PC. Give MS a ring and see if they can reactivate it for you, for all you know someone else may have coppied your activation code or used it with a copied disc.
