Default Anyone recommend a decent router

Im with Be and have had the same modem for years which has always been wired to my main PC and PS3 so no problems there, but since using a Asus 1000HG netbook and Samsung galaxy S phones we need something that the Wifi signal will reach upstairs as the current signal is shocking and regularly drops out of range

moving the modem is a no no

Current modem is THOMSON TG585v7

I dont want to spend anymore then £50 if I can help it

Ive seen modems with 2 airels on are these any better?

Thanks

The current thompsons are G routers,

BE will i believe be bringing out N models sometime

TBH any N router should do, you can obtain the Access specs from BE quit easliy.

From personal preference i wouldn't touch Netgear, Belkin & D link have worked for me

The Draytek crowd will be along shortly to profess there superiority

Hit your local car boot, as long as the router isnt an AOL or sky model , some bargains are to be had

I'd say the opposite, Netgear has been excellent for me, just got a newish DGN2200 adsl/wireless modem recently, its superb n so easy to setup.

It depends what you want, my Draytek has lots of advanced functionality that I never use! And recently the firmware updates have done something to the streaming of video across the network.

I like my Netgear 834..

althought the netgear 834gt nearly got netgear sued when sky started dishing them out, the one i have currently from Virgin for my 50mb is totally fine and has been for 2 years.

I do like Vigour BUT i wouldnt buy one if you use newsgroups for leeching, a while ago i had major issues with bith the 2600s and 2900s of which Vigour actually stopped responding to my technical ticket as they could solve the issue of Lockups when using port 119.

As Ant says above mines also the 2000 model and its been bulletproof

Can anyone tell me if my router is any good as I've had it at least 4-5 years, although I have no issues with it I'd be interested to know if it's worthwhile upgrading to a better one.

The router is Netgear DG834GT.

Yes mate, little white one. I don't really want anything tbh, just that the way technology moves these days I thought I could maybe benefit from upgrading as as I said it must be getting on for 5 years old if not more. What do you mean bogged down? and why sued? Sorry I don't really know a lot about routers

Me either Dunx. I just can't believe it's still a good router after all these years the way things move forward, especially the way anything computer related lasts a few months before becoming outdated

check out dd-wrt.com mate - if they have some compatible firmware on their site you can then use this to unlock some extra features - one being transmit power.

I did it on my linksys (which from factory has a 57% transmit power) - I used the new firmware to increase this a bit and now can get good reception all thru the house

Personally love Linksys routers - the old school boxy ones with blue fascia and grey body (think before they started to be badged as Cicso Linksys) !

Hope it helps!

Buy a Sky router - specifically, the Netgear DG934 off ebay for a few quid. Then flash it with the Netgear DG834g v3 firmware to turn it in to a generic non-Sky version. You'll end up with a mega reliable router for next to nothing.

Here's a DG934 on ebay that is looking very cheap

The DG834GT is a good router to use with Be as the Broadcom chipset in the router matches the Broadcom kit that Be (and O2) use in the exchanges. This typically means the sync rate is a little higher than when using non-Broadcom based routers. Until recently I used a DG834GT for years, but it finally stopped working. The DG934 Sky router I turned in to a DG834gv3 is better for me. Slightly lower sync rate but the WiFi range is better.

Vigors are nice. But not the most user intuitive for people not fully versed in IT acronyms, and in most situations OTT for home users...unless you want your own VPN server and want a bit more customisation with port mapping/forwarding/subnets/firewall etc...

Netgear would be my next port of call...BUT some of their models really are poo. The DGN1000 for exmaple has woefully poor WiFi stability. Even though its a 'N' router!

Our new ISP gave us one for work...and they insisted we use it as it was all pre configured. Put it this way, it didn't last long.
