I did this about 2 years ago, so abit rusty but anyhow.
when you select> add account > other > add mail account and input your details after that you need to make sure the email setting are set up as
Incoming Mail Server = pop.ntlworld.com
Outgoing Mail Server = smtp.ntlworld.com
I don't think SSL connections works from memory had to do it as unsecure but the email settings are the important part to make it work.

Are you with O2? If so, this might help (taken from this thread)
POP Information
Name: Your Name (obviously)
Address: Your Email Address(again obviously)
Description: Your Choice here I have my email address again
Incoming Mail Server
Host Name: pop.ntlworld.com
User Name: Your User Name(your NTL username IE the first part of your email before the @ntl....... bit
Password: Your Password(again NTL password)
Outgoing Mail Server(this was the bit I was having trouble with)
Host Name: smpt.02.co.uk
User Name: your O2 username@smpt.02.co.uk(so if your username was jim66 you would enter jim66@02.co.uk)
Password: Your O2 password
Use SSL: Off
Authentication: Password
Server Port: 25
It might also be worth having a read of this as well.

Apple or no Apple I'd recommend moving from an ISP based email address. If you don't understand why then please ask some questions you might learn something.

I agree you should move away from an ISP email. I used to have a bt email but when I changed companies I lost the e-mail address. That's a total pain in the butt when you have to change every log in you've ever created >.<

I have 2 none isp email addresses which I use, I don't use my isp email for reasons stated above but my point is if the op wants to use it he should be able to

I still use my old ntlworld account as my main email address as it's the one I was given 10 years ago. Never had a bother with it. Email is pushed to both my blackberry and my HTC no problem. I can send and receive email from both phones

unless you logged on via dialup once in 90 days - they suspend it, then 90 days later they permentantly delete the account unless you re-activated it
when I was told -- I was shocked for about 3 secounds - but sense prevailed and it was quite a cathartic experiance actually.
I have a gmail account now (and thks Markus - noted)
