Default HDMI output problem on laptop

I have a Sony Vaio VPCEB2ZOE - Intel i3 350 with 512 Mb ATI 5470 HD dedicated graphics. Overall I'm pleased with it, but when outputting a DVD to my full HD Panasonic TV I get an annoying strobe effect (bottom to top) when the picture is panning. On the graphics options the 1080p output is greyed out, and I can only chose 720.

Any ideas how I can improve this please? As I understand it this laptop should be easily capable of giving me a decent picture.

Have you installed the latest Drivers for your graphics card? Try both the Sony & AMD site to see what the latest is. Also I noticed on one of my laptops that since putting on the latest Nvidia drivers (Toshiba didn't have the latest) it also installed a new HDMI driver along side it.

Apparently I have the latest drivers (September 2010).

Any other ideas?

Update:

I played my first blu-ray today, and it worked perfectly, no issues whatsoever. It defaulted to Win DVD BD rather than wmp or VLC, so maybe I'll see how that performs with a DVD.

As for changing the cable, I've tried it with a cheapo jobbie as well as an Atlas Silver HDMI 1.3-cat 2 cable, and the DVD problem is there with both.

Try before buying new cables etc.

Cheers, I have the current versions of media player and VLC, and they are the ones giving me the problem. I have also tried a decent quality lead (see #5) and still have the problem.

Not tried the WinDVD on a DVD yet.

Hi there this is cause just on some DVD or every DVD?My guess is you are tying play some movies, which have protection.
Or you can try play movie in other format like DivX,if its play.
On some forums i have seen some people suffering with same problems,or similar(Audio CD cannot play,DVD is inside, but PC say insert DVD)

The strobing happens on every DVD so far. All legit, originals.

Not a hint of strobing with the blu-ray.
