What's the next new smartphone
Whether you think it's the Desire/HD, Galaxy S, Nexus S or iPhone 4 as the phone at the top of the hill right now.
What do you reckon the next big one will be, or what is tempts you next?
- LG Optimus 2x / Black, Motorola Atrix, Sony Ericson Arc, iPhone 5(?)

It'll be interesting to see what Apple comes up with. It'll have to be something spectacular as my wife looks on at my Android phone (from her iPhone) and is starting to like that interface / hardware better.

I still want a multitouch back, the glass back on the 4 may have been a hint of what's to come. What hardware features do other phones have that the iPhone 4 doesn't? Apart from removable storage - which could happen - I can't think of anything.

There is loads of time this year for big changes in the phones, I know the 4g network is coming to the UK so obviously the phones will have this and I pressume bigger internal storage. I have 40gig of storage in galaxy s and most of it is used up. I personally think making the phones lighter would be a better option as then you wouldn't need to worry about your phone as much if you accidentally dropped it. The weight of the iphone 4 was one of the things that put me off as I was initially going to get one.

4G is a long way off. Dual processor phones are on the horizon. I'd like to see the battery technology advance as well as the phones are.

Bizarrely Samsung have decided to remove the external storage option on the Nexus S. My Galaxy S has a couple of interchangable cards that I have different things on.
Battery life! Yes, the bane of most people with Smartphones life.

What I'd like to see in the iPhone 5 is most of what I'd like to have seen in the iPhone 4:
More storage built in. Base of 32, but offer 64 and 128 GB versions
SD slot to allow for increase in storage
Removable battery, so I can have a spare one, fully charged when the need arises. If and when the internal one dies, it's easy to change, no need to involve anyone else.
GSM and CDMA in one device, something not at present possible.
As for software based things:
Built in wi-fi hotspot creation (looks like that will be coming in 4.3, but carriers will need to allow users to use it)
Bluetooth file sync.
Infra-red. Ok, bit old hat, but it'd be nice to have the iPhone as a all in one remote (iPad would be lovely too) without having to use an additional plug in component, obviously software would need to be there too.
Allow users to add / edit their own themes for the phone.

More storage would be great. I've hardly got any space left out of 32 GB.
Theres a very nice wifi based infra red unit available, I'll try to find a link.
Removable Battery is never going to happen.

Personally, I think Android and WP7 are going to dominate the market this year, Android tablet's especially.

Isn't that a bit off the mark though, compare the iPhone to the Nexus by all means, but a free operating system used on thousands of different phones is sure to sell more than a single piece of hardware.

The Smartphone OS market, no doubt about it. iPhone will continue to outsell all other smartphones for some time though. Bit of a shame Win 7 isn't doing very well, looked good, I preferred it to Android.

Not sure what will be the next *biggie*. I have a Desire HD and it's a great phone. One thing I do think though is that multi-CPUs are coming. We've already seen an LG with one at CES. Plus more of those 'docking stations' where you plug in your *smart* phone and you have a working computer with proper keyboard/screen/mouse etc.
However, the one thing that would make a mega-seller would be one that had the attributes of any of the above BUT a vastly better battery life. Imagine any of the above able to last a week on a charge?!

I'll be interested to see what HTC can come up with. They have some good phones out, but haven't managed to tick all the boxes on a single phone yet. My Desire HD arrives tomorrow which I'm looking forward too, but apparently the screen is not as good as other phones. For hardware the iPhone has it over everything else at the min, will be good to see what comes next. I didn't go with the iPhone4 as there are some things I don't like. Non removable battery or storage for starters, but to be honest this would never be an issue for me as I don't take then out of my current phone. I still prefer Android over iOS and that is the main reason why I chose the DHD. I like to be able to customise my homescreens with widgets and whatever I like and as the platform is becoming more popular the apps are starting to get good. Also I like the ability to set up a wireless network for my laptop to connect to. Or just plug it in using a USB and use the phones internet, apparently you have to pay for this on the iPhone?
So I think the iPhone5 will be the phone that everyone has to have in 2011, but not necessarily the best phone. I think HTC might bring something out that will be close or possibly better.

Manufacturers should be making this their number one priority.
Remember when Nokia came out with a GSM mobile that would last a whole week on a single charge?
Speeding up the GUI is a next thing; as well as streamlining the OS and on-screan menu graphics, as it really does slow down the user interface. I had a play with an antique Nokia 8310 the other day, it was suprising how razor instant it reacts to key presses when compared to modern smart phones. I never realised how bad the pretty sliding/fading/animations/gestures used when navigating menus were at slowing down the actual use of a typical smartphone.
They'll get there in the end, I suppose.

The battery life on the Pearl that I have is very good -- it'll last a couple of days and I get disgusting amounts of email (150+ a day that I reply to).
I don't know about the Storm.
Battery life would be at the top of my list. The iPad has it about right: 10 hours of use is great. Although the battery is huge of course ...
