Seriously tempted to buy a NAS with drives being so cheap at the moment. Two bay jobby with 2*2TB drives in RAID (the mode with redundancy, RAID 1?) should do the trick for the foreseeable

I have been looking at storage issue recently as I am running out, so have just bought this. Clicky.
Mines running 2TB of storage with full duplication (So 4x 1TB disc's) and it is fast enough to stream 2x 1080P movies to two separate systems at the same time.
It is VERY impressive indeed for the cash.

I too was thinking about Windows Home Servers (WHS) and was waiting for the new version (Vail) to come out. Was supposed to be early this year but in true Microsoft fashion it has been delayed while the remove some useful functions etc.
It is also interesting that HP are ending production of WHS boxes and have no plans for a future product by the sound of things: http://www.wegotserved.com/2010/12/0...ves-vail-cold/
So do you go for one of these (I'd build my own) or buy a good quality NAS that has all the media serving and other stuff built in (e.g. QNAP)? The NAS is a more attractive option at the moment as I don't really want a full blown computer running 24/7 and Vail seems like it going to need a bit more processing power than the current offering. Most NAS are less than 50W when running and significantly less when idle.

I run WHS. I don't plan to move to Vail as they've removed the Drive Extender feature so the ease of putting it a mix of disks, being able to upgrade on the fly etc is gone.
I'd happily move to a NAS if I could find one which did full backups like WHS. If a disk dies in any of my machines, I slot a new disk in, boot from the WHS restore CD, select a backup to restore and that's it. The PC is back as it was that day.
Most NAS's that I've seen only allow you to backup selected folders etc. No bare-metal restore option.

That is an interesting aspect for sure, haven't really looked into it in any detail but the backup facilities sound very useful especially as my network is set to grow in the coming years (laptop, netbook, work horse PC, media centre(s), etc.).
Oh well expect a thread about it when I have to cash to spare.

For those of you with games machines, It is also damn good to be able to access all you videos, music and pictures on the PS3 as well, brilliant for showing relatives holiday snaps etc on your plasma... not a PC in sight.
I also find NAS just doesnt cut it when streaming a 1080P movie.
