Can you play a film from a computer via an ethernet cable to a tv to watch?
Just an idea-might be not possible-i have several films on my desktop computer located in an upstairs room-this computer is connected via an ethernet cable to a router downstairs via which i can also plug my tv into via an ethernet cable from the freesat box and watch bbc i player on tv.
Now if i plug the freesat box into router and leave my computer on upstairs is there anyway the films can go via ethernet cable and router box so tv can view them?
Have tried it quickly and only i player is showing when i turn tv to internet- and nothing shows when i turn tv via settings to pc-does this mean it cant be done or am i missing out something?
Any help?

A friend just bought an Apple TV - €119, plugged it in, username and password, all the family are now using it, even the four year old via the iPad remote. It's the mutts nadgers.

Apple TV is a poor choice for a network media player, Aldi/Lidl, one of them, had a media player in the other week that had more features, more content, oh and a USB port, all for £29.
Take a look at the new D-Link Boxee Box.

No think i just missed out when i brought telly for it having a USB port-it has an sd card slot but that only allows viewing of pics in JPEG form as tried a movie on a sd card in slot.

I got a western digital media player from Maplins (about £30) and just put the movies on a flashdrive and watch or you can get a long HDMI cable and plug the pc to the tv.

What the! That costs as much as an Apple TV! I'd be to ashamed to put that in my living room, it has blue lights and I'll bet my boxing day jumper the remote is atrocious.

i'd have functionality over style anyday. and to be honest my ac ryan blends in well with my all black setup

Hardly bollocks, it does cost as much! I wouldn't give up all the fantastic features and all round simpleness of Apple TV just so I could watch pirate movies without converting them. Go on, show me the remote, I need a good belly laugh.

No it's not all pirated movies i have a 1.5tb in my media player with dvd collection all in .iso format.
But as usual you know best
features as in a under-spec machine?

Now A.C.Ryan is looking to fix that with the new Playon!HD media player, and if the specifications are anything to go by it's onto an absolute winner. It supports every video format in popular use, including not just MOV and MKV but also such rarities as ASF, FLV and RMVB, all at up to 1,080p over both HDMI and component - and for home cinema buffs there's even 1,080p 24 support. It caters to both Dolby and DTS audio (pass-through or down-mixed to stereo), features extensive audio codec and subtitle support, and offers both wired and wireless-n networking with NAS functionality, YouTube and BitTorrent. Uniquely, it can even read media from external CD/DVD drives!

AirPlay and Apple Remote. When your Taiwanese junk can do just those two things you may have a valid point, until then you're wrong.
The remote isn't as bad as I was expecting.

Having done research for quite a while before buying a media player, the PlayOn!HD mini won hands down.
I have a PlayOn!HD Mini and the outlaws have AppleTV. The mini plays everything and every audio format. Stutter-free and i have ripped all my dvd collection (.ISO) onto a 1.5TB HDD.
Have a movie jukebox running on it and all have moviesheets, which was easy to setup and maintain. My 6 year old can navigate it, there is constant updates & support for it with a good community and i also download boxing and stream it to the tv over WiFi. Wipes the floor with AppleTV.
The Mini is usually on offer from Scan and you can get free delivery with AVF membership. Mini cost £80, dongle £10, HDD £45.

You're entitled to your opinion as am I. I think you're talking crap and you think I am. Personally I never subscribed to buying DVD's so the rental features of Apple TV offer huge benefits, something you're box can't offer. Even if you found it easy I doubt my mother could ever get the same results from that box as you or I could and that's where Apple win, no instructions needed.
Anyhow, whatever floats your boat.

I bet renting HD films online with a poor Internet connection is a amazing experience

It's a lot better than a walk to Blockbuster when you're in the middle of nowhere, Spain. My friends have a 1meg at best connection, we chose a movie Inception and watched it that night. No problem.

In hd and instant playback? I doubt it very much
But at the end of the day the op wanted to play his files from his computer upstairs , you advised a tool that "could " do it if he encoded all his files to a format apple friendly.
I highlighted a more advanced and simple solution to yours.

Who said instant, we chose a film from the extensive choice, had dinner, watched the film. All very civilised.
I suggested a working solution to the posters problems, you said I'm talking bollocks, which I'm not.

you need to re -read what was said!
you advised the ATV and i said forget it as the playon would do the better job he required it for. then going to apple defence mode slating the other option.
