Quick help needed ram problem
I have just install 2 x 1gb ram into a desktop running windows vista and now when I turn it on it freezers on start up and I get several vertical lines.
If I turn it off and back on again it works fine. Any Ideas?

Okay. Are the 2 x 1GB RAM chips the same make and model? Are these Chips being inserted with other RAM already in the machine? Have you checked the BIOS (setup on start-up) settings to make sure that you have no manual override settings for the RAM which will make it not work properly? Try setting this to Auto if not already.

ALWAYS test new RAM before using it a computer (i.e don't even boot it up).
Faulty, incorrectly configured, or incompatible RAM can seriously **** up your computer and corrupt your operating system (been there myself).
Download these two programs and install them on a floppy/CD/flash drive and ensure they give a clean bill of health before even thinking about using a computer with new RAM: http://www.memtest.org/ or http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
Any errors, check bios settings and check compatibility in the motherboard manual. You may need to do a BIOS update (beware if you use RAID, this can reset it and render it inoperable - back up before reflashing - been there myself
). If all else fails and you still get errors, the RAM is probably faulty.

there were already 2 x 512 sticks in there and I added to matching pairs of 1 gb. The system load and found 3gb.
I will look at the bios and change the ram to auto. Do i need to mess with the voltage.
Should I take the ram out and see if the computer runs fine with out it.
Thanks for the help.

Update BIOS(some BIOS are updated from Windows)and check how many position you have for RAM(with some MB Asus you must ad RAM to exactly slot, and if you get RAM to bad slot,PC freeze),if you have 4(get ram to every other set).

From: Slowly rebuilding the kit of bits into a car...
Check the manual, put the larger memory sticks in the first two slots, and try the PC...
dunx
P.S. Then try with just the the 2 x 0.5 Gb sticks in too...

I have had a look at the computer again and the problem did not happen while i was there.
He reckons it only happens when he first turns on the pc and if he restarts it goes away.
In slot 1 3 he had ddr2 pc2 5300 1.8v 512mb. I checked on cpuz and this runs at 333mhz
I have added in 2 and 4 ddr2 pc26400 1.gb 1.8v and this one runs at 400mhz.
If i just leave it will it cause any damage apart from being annoying having to restart it all the time.
Or should i go back and update the bios.
Thanks for the help

You will probably have to manually set the RAM timings to that of the slowest RAM chip in the BIOS. The faster chips will usually work ok at slower timings ok, but there are exceptions.
PS. Remember what I said about trying to do this kind of work as a business
