Yes will straight fit,but for 100% update your BIOS.

It's not actually for me, so thought I would double check. Thanks for the help.

Not sure about my mate updating the BIOS though, as he isn't too good with anything.

Hi mate,updating BIOS is easy.Just tell your mate,download BIOS from Asus website,and download Asus Update Utility

Should he update before he installs the new memeory, or with the old stuff in?

No just install new memory,if recognize full memory installed your friend will be fine.
