Default laptop prob - won't boot to bios

Hi

I am trying to fix an Advent 9215 laptop for my son's friend. The problem is that it won't boot up: the power light comes on and the HDD light illuminates for several seconds and then goes out. The screen stays blank.

So it could be a failed motherboard of HDD. But one thing that I've noticed is that on the rear cover there is a screw for the key board (has K/B next to it). On the underneath of the cover and next to where the screw comes through it there was a metal tab (part of the inside part of the cover). This tab would have been secured by the screw to the motherboard. But this tab has broken off and was lose (seems someone has had the cover off). Now I'm wondering whether this earthed some part of the motherboard and is the reason why the laptop will not start.

Any advice gratefully received, thanks
Nick
