Posted this elsewhere , but as Mrs DD was getting my 3G, I backed it up, then did a full erase from the settings menu
settings>general>reset>erase all content and data
Then I upgraded it to ios 4.0.1 to give her, effectively, a clean "new" phone.
I've already posted on here that my 3G was much improved by a full restore speed wise, but what I'm happy to report is that after a full data erase, upgrade from ios 4 to 4.0.1 and a restore (just for the hell of it) it is now operating at pretty much the same speed it was before the upgrade to ios4.
In other words, its absolutely fine running 4.0.1. and feels subjectively just as it did when it was new.
