Calling Mac Gurus - using iMac cams for "security" cameras
OK - I've got a load of iMacs with built in cams.
Is there -
1. A method of accessing the web-cam without the user's intervention (ie they can't turn it off?)
i can only think that the app gets buried in the OS, but can the "active" icon be removed from the dock?
2. I would also like to be able to stream the video feeds from these webcams via ethernet to a kind of "TV" station.... ie a monitor that can display all the cam feeds.
I know that ARD can do this, but I want it to be "broadcast" to TV monitors around the college if necessary.
But that's a different matter!
Any thoughts?
My other option is to get a load of wireless IP cams for the rooms and feed them into a spare computer..... more expensive, but will free the computers up for the task they're installed for

Of course mate - the section will have LOADS of "you're being watched" notices though.
It's just to stop the user disabling the camera.
Good point about the green light, but I want them to know they're being watched

Dan,
In all seriousness, have a read of this and/or search for "Lower Merion School District". I know it's the US but law over this kind of thing could be the same in the UK.
I don't think a warning notice would be enough, you'd probably need written permission from all parents (for those under 18) prior to setting this up, and even then you should really get consent from all students.
As for software to do wat you want, have a look at iris, it might do what you want. Also look at evocam. Another could also be worth a look here. Here is one more.
Of those I've only used EvoCam and only to monitor what the dog was up to

Thanks for this Markus,
The college notify all students/parents that their movements are being monitored on our security system anyway.
The issue being that I've got a load of studio control rooms that require additional monitoring - so whilst the Mac issue itself may not be workable (due to processor demands from their real tasks - audio), the IP camera will be happening anyway.
I had seen the US issues though.
