Hi

My Acer laptop battery is dead after 11 months of ownership, windows charging icon states no battery present. I have tried a friends battery and my laptop works fine so its the battery that is dead.

Acer are saying the laptop has 12 months warranty from date of purchase but the battery only comes with 6 months warranty.

Is this right? legal?

The manufacturer can offer whatever warranty they like. A shorter consumable battery warranty is quite common: Sony used to offer three months...

Whether you can pursue a claim against the retailer is a separate matter.

Your claim is against the retailer, not the manufacturer.
You have a valid claim, and if the retailer won;t help, take them to court and you will win.
Knowing your rights is a big help!

Knowing where you stand will help; but in order to 'win' you will have to establish that the battery should last for a greater period of time. The retailer will argue that it is a consumable item and that the manufacturer regards its minimum acceptable life as being six months, hence the warranty period.

That will be far more difficult - your best chance of success will be if you take them to court and they dont defend, or cave in beforehand as winning will cost the more than paying.
