The cheap one linked above is not drop or accidentally run over proof compared to the bbc article.

Always have more than 1 backup

They didn't actually say how big the "hard drive" was!

I am sure that a standard 2GB SD Card would survive whilst wrapped in a load of insulation and a metal case (or was that "steel armour plating" that popped when a digger drove over it).
