I have a problem. Whenever a website is down i keep being taken to this site http://www.lop.com/dnserror.cgi?s=http://lop.com/
The site lop.com set itself up automatically a few months ago as my main page whenever i opened Internet Explorer. I reset this to google.com in options. Now and again it likes to take me to the lop dns error page just for the fun of it when a website is actually up and its getting rather annoying. Can anyone help with a way to get rid of it?
Thanks, Hos.

I can't believe they are allowed to do that kind of thing!
I also think it was with kazaa that it first installed itself.
After reading the links above. if you go to http://lop.com/help.html at the bottom there are links to programs which will uninstall lop. i've ran the "How do I remove Lop.com as my search engine?" one and so far not had any problems.
Will wait and see but thanks for the links. thought it was just me!

Hello
I was just about to post that!
Finally got rid of the stupid thing by going here http://lop.com/help.html#how and running the uninstall program.
It scares me that it CAN do that. I'm usually exceptionally careful on what I install / click on.
Steve.

Some virus checkers flag up malicious code that does this..... often found in Warez websites etc (not that I go to websites like that! )
anyway - grab a decent virus checker, or Ad-aware and let it sort out the problem for you.

Why worry Gents? ? ? ?
Open internet Explorer and go to Tools on the Toolbar and select Internet options. On the first page you see headed "General" there is a section called homepage. In the address just type http:\\www.scoobynet.co.uk or any other site you could possibly wish to start on and hey presto..... it works
Any probs just drop me an E-mail maxray69@hotmail.com

Stealth:
Unfortunately not. It changes the page that displays when you get a DNS error as well so that it forwards to www.lop.com.
I couldn't figure out how on earth it was doing it. I must of loaded an exe file that changed one of IE's internal files.
Very bizarre.

run sfc.exe ships with 2000 & xp, tells you which system files have been modified, I "assume" this will include iexplore.exe also
but as the other guys have said adware etc are very good programs for this.

This might well be due to going to a dodgy website... MP3 etc and accidentaly agreeing to install a plug in for IE. If this is the case you should be able to uninstall it or go in to the regestry and find lop.com and delete it... can't really do any harm so long as that is all you delete ;0)

You'll probably find it in the registry somewhere...
I don't have this problem so I can't verify it, but I suspect looking in:
HKEY_CURRRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchUrl\
you'll see a key called provider of type REG_SZ, now mine currently has no value (so it's defaulting the the MSN autosearch), but yours might, if it does and it mentions lop, you could try setting it to nothing.
As I say, I can't verify this as I don't have the problem, don't try this unless you feel comfortable fiddlign with your registry because you can break you machine if you bodge it (although less so with XP)

I downloaded the removal exe from www.lop.com (posted a link above) and this completely removed lop.com from my computer.
Had no problems so far and everything is back to normal
As for dodgy site. yep it was no doubt. hehe.
