Git

What spec of machine have you got and what/how did you get SL onto it?

Assume it's 10.6.0?

10.6 is, from what I understand mainly a few cosmetic tweaks. Most of the changes are at the developer level, where a lot of stuff has changed. It's 64-bit, plus it is Intel only too.

I've not gone to SL yet, was thinking about upgrading tonight, but am still thinking about it Just need to triple-check that the apps I use most will run under 10.6, plus look at what issues there are, and what 10.6.2 has fixed and what issues 10.6.2 is causing, might be a bit early on that front however.

what an idiot

nice stable 10.6.0 - I must be able to upgrade to 10.6.2

i took out the offensive kexts, rebuild the mkext and repaired permissions, but I've had constant KPs since then.

Even tried putting back the 10.6.0 kernel too.

rats

always have a base (working) system to work from

I'm back

gory details...

OSx86 community is huge and mostly unhelpful. People only seem to help when they post a guide and others criticise it, so they assist to ensure the validity of the 'guide'.

psystar's REBEL EFI works like a charm.

It's not just SN, it's, well, from the digging I've done, about 90 percent of the sites IB runs, including it's own! Could not access most of them, server timing out, or when it did load it was unbearably slow, looks to be a lot better today.

short answer, yes you can.

long answer is...

you need to spend loads of time on insanelymac.com reading and reading and reading, mainly because you can ask and no one seems to reply. whatever level you are, if you ask a question you're a noob and their attitude is, go research and stop asking stupid questions

so, broadly speaking you need a boot loader, a mac to prepare everything and a retail copy of OSX... and a usb stick (8gb minimum)

Either use Chameleon or Netkas.org's boot loader.
Chameleon: Bring Mac OS X Developers Together
netkas.org

For USB you'll need to set your BIOS to boot from usb drive.

You are trying to fool the EFI (Extensible Firmware interface - mac BIOS basically) into thinking you have mac hardware, but also that your EFI, more or less, is matched to your machine.

So, you may or may not have to compile your own DSDT.aml (description of non comformist hardware) file to accompany the boot process.

You'll also need to provide the necessary kext files (packages that contain hardware drivers) to match the details in your EFI and DSDT.

and you'll need to restore a copy of osx onto your stick.

OR...

get the rebel EFI from psystar: download it, burn it, boot from it and install OSX. Install the application on the disc, run that, install the drivers and restart. done.

If you have any esoteric hardware, expect trouble - I have a quad core intel, P35 chipset mobo and Nvidia 9800GT - all pretty standard.

It is all a mystery to me

I am sure this thread it about something else completely different...

...anyway I am running 10.6.2 and it is fine. At least the really annoying Airport issue (that didn't exist according to Apple) has gone away and it works perfectly!

PS Googled Hackintosh and now fully understand the thread! I will stick with my shiny Macbook Pro

Trout, the premise is that
1) I want to run OSX
2) I spent a grand on a pc that's perfectly capable of running OSX
3) My 8 hard drives won't fit in the back of an iMac lol

when this pc busts, then I'll get an iMac and a networked storage array doodad. for the moment I'm not wasting my pc just coz apple says i have to use its hardware.

All good and respect that you managed to get it to work.

I read that at least one reason for SL was to prevent Hackintoshing! But I guess you knew that!

And does it run well with a quad core? I have an early Macbook Pro with simple Core Duo.

That is pretty quick Dude!! My Macbook 1.1 managed a stellar 2195 in 32 bit mode (OK I couldn't be arsed to pay the $2.99!)

I think I need a new Macbook!

10.6.2 will not boot on Intel Atom based machines, perhaps that is what you are referring to David?
