Ubuntu is good for laptops and lower end pc's
Its a shame some of the non MS competitors dont have the same hugh marketing budgets that MS do - then it would become interesting

How stable is the hackintosh leopard installation. I too have began moving away from Microsoft products.
I have Ubuntu 9.04 on my latop, Fedora 10 running Amahi home server, Untangle providing boundary protection, a server running ESX for playing in virtual environments, Network attached storage from FreeNAS and only one box with XP pro still on it solely for photoshop.
Might just give the Leopard thing a go - its raining and I have nothing much to be doing today.

I have retail copies of leopard and snow, but I ended up installing the iPC 10.5.6. Then upgraded to 10.5.8 via apple update.
Had to use nvinject to set my graphics card, osx86 tools to set the boot strings.
My install is very stable - abit IP35Pro XE, Q9450@3 ghz, 8gb ram and nvidia 9800gt 512mb - and I was quite happy to mill around the Internet and desktop whilst it was copying 600gb from a raid10 to another sata drive - for some reason I would always leave windows to complete copying before tackling any other tasks

with time, poor maintenance and additional hardware your boot time will only increase.
I wonder how osx fairs under those conditions. really. i don't actually know.

Possibly, but I've seen boot times increase with Ubuntu as well (and Fedora which I've used a fair bit at work recently). Can't comment on OSX...

i'm not trying to start a fanboi war here lol
My vista 64bit was pretty quick, but am very pleased that osx is quicker
I have also noticed that itunes and iphone connectivity and safari are noticably slicker than their windows counterparts. Anyone else notice this?
I'm also wondering how spotlight collects its meta data because I copied over 600gb to my 'osx' drive and spotlight seems to be damn quick off the bat

That's very true. Apple is notoriously bad at writing Windows software. Always has been. There's no reason why iTunes/Quicktime etc couldn't be as slick and fast as the OSX versions. They just choose not to make them so (probably a marketing thing to try and persuade people to move to a Mac).

Another thing that puzzles me is that I have 8x1tb Sata 3gbs drives in my machine and they've been in all sorts of formats in the bios from IDE, AHCI, RAID0, 1 and finally 1+0.
For the moment they are back to AHCI
I can copy from 1 drive to another in OSX at a sustained rate of 110mb/s
In vista, it would not go above 60mb/s for the same scenario.
I am talking about 100+ gb copying too.

Just joking, you are probably right on the button there. Apple is always going to make things ultra slick on their own OS before anyone else's.
iTunes on the Windows platform is just no fun at all, though I will admit version 9 does seem a lot better than previous offerings, but it's not perfect and as you say, it's quite probably down to Apple not overly caring too much, as they want everyone to buy their hardware.

Markus what good sites are there to read up on learning OSX and just navigating about? For example the first thing I downloaded was Firefox. When I ran it it created a folder on the desktop and have no idea why. Just need to read up on the basics of how stuff works in terms of running/installing apps etc

Mac OS X for Dummies (I'm sure there is one) would probably be a good place to look as well. You may also want to check out this and this. Both "Missing Manual" books and are meant to be pretty good.
Out of interest, what was the name of the folder it created on the desktop and was anything inside this folder, if so, what?

Thanks Markus. As for the folder I think I created a folder shortcut. When I downloaded Firefox and double clicked it there were 2 options but not labelled to say what they did so just ran them both. So i'm guessing one installed the app and the other put a desktop shortcut to the folder.
The last time I used an Apple machine was os8 10+ years ago when there was no cd eject button on the hideous grey box and you had to eject the disk by dragging it to the trash can in the OS. I'm back to knowing absolutely nothing about using an Apple OS. I've installed it and downloaded and installed Firefox and that's it so far. I'm on 10.5.7 and haven't gone to 10.5.8 yet as got to understand how to upgrade in osx86. Then going to Snow is a whole new ball game and the guide i've seen is too much for me currently.
I've got an old green/blue apple box upstairs under my desk not even built so time to throw this out now I can use OSX on non Apple hardware. I doubt it's even worth anything on ebay.

Could be a shortcut to the Downloads folder, which would make some sense.
There is still no CD Eject button on the boxes these days, but at least there is an Eject option, so it's not confusing that you need to eject by dragging it to the trash, which most feel means it'll trash the disk. This does exist in OS X though, but at least the Dock icon of the trash will change from a trash can to an eject symbol when you drag and drop a disk over the icon.
I'm still on 10.5.7 on my main machine. I haven't been bothered to upgrade to 10.5.8, let alone SL on it yet. I've been waiting for updates to a few apps before going to SL, and most of the ones I use do now seem to have been updated, but I'm going to wait until about two weeks after 10.6.2 is out before deciding to upgrade, no doubt 10.6.3 will be seeded by that time
