2 parter:

1. I'm trying to get my ATI 4870 to work on my Hackintosh, but I'm having trouble, I'm using Ideneb 10.5.5 & have been trying to upgrade to 10.5.8 but to no avail. What would be the best course of action?

2. I am also looking at buying a Mac mini, 2.0ghz, 2gb ram 320gb hdd & 9400 gfx - what is your opinion on this machine, its in my local PC world for £499. Should I buy the newer version with the faster processor or would this be sufficient for most tasks? I don't really want to spend Imac money so I thought the mini was a better option.

cheers for any help.

You called

this will be subject to editing as I am typing this on the phone as I am not at home right now.

First part I will be honest I don't know much about the hackintosh side of things. I will have a look around later when I am home and see what I can find out

as for the mini, again let me check when I am back home.

Sorry, not muh help right now I know!

I would say that mini will be fine for most things. The new ones are slightly speed bumps anyway.

i have a mini 2ghz/2gb ram and it's very responsive

however, like all things, if you want specialization it's not the machine for the job - video encoding, top flight games, hardcore photo editing/management, etc you want an iMac and not a mac mini.

I doubt I will be doing loads of video editing or playing topflight games, got a ps3 & xbox for that. The small form factor and rock solid os are what are swaying me towards the mini. I do like the imacs but the cost is pretty extortionate.

Ok, back home. Looks like PC World are discounting the old kit as the new low-end Mac Mini is £499. That's for 2.26GHz, 160GB HD, 2GB RAM and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M card. That's including VAT too.

If I go to the Apple store and spec it with a 320GB drive it bumps it up to £579. So you're talking 80 quid more for the brand new model, add another 80 if you want 500GB.

My personal preference would be to go for the new model, simply as it is the new model, though the outgoing one isn't bad, and the spec is similar, but new is new Sorry, a bit silly I know.

As for the hackintosh question, what exactly is/isn't happening when you try and go to 10.5.8?

Cheers for the advice, I'm going to see if I can stretch to an iMac, if not then I'll probably get the 500gb new version.

I upgraded to 10.5.8 osx restarted & now iot just hangs. I'm currently re-installing it now, back to 10.5.5 - i was upgrading so i could install the correct drivers for my ati 4870 card.
