Why won't Media Player play my AVI files?

Why won't Media Player play my AVI files?
As title, my laptop doesn't seem to want to play them for some reason. It says aquiring codec, codec acquired, and then either just plays the sound or plays nothing at all.
Any help to try and sort it would be appreciated.

You probably don't have the codec installed.
Download the delightfully named gspot GSpot Codec Information Appliance and that will tell you.
