Default Playing avi files with realplayer ??

Son has a couple off avi file type films which he wants to play on his pc, just up till tonight he was happily playing these particular files via realplayer but for some reason he is now getting an error message showing when he tries to play these same files, the error reads along the lines off realplayer is missing software to play thse particular files and do you want realplayer to try locate the missing software to play the files ?? press yes but comes back with no suitable extra software could be found.

so I then learn that he was " tidying up " his pc today and that he may have deleted a few things ???!!

tried uninstalling realplayer and putting it on again but still no joy in playing the avi files, so okay anyone able to tell me what has gone wrong in that it will no longer recognise the files ??
alternativly anyone suggest an alternative avi player preferably freeware which will play these particular file types ??

cheers

(1)media player classic

Free-Codecs.com :: Download Media Player Classic 6.4.9.1 : Media Player Classic is an enhanced version of Media Player 6.4

(2)media player (should be installed) but a codec pack below to enhance it for Win XP

Free-Codecs.com : Download FFDShow MPEG-4 Video Decoder 2009-10-06, FFDShow MPEG-4 Video Decoder 2009-10-06 and FFDShow MPEG-4 Video Decoder 2009-09-17 SSE : FFDSHOW is a DirectShow decoding filter

or if you use Vista

http://shark007.net/vistacodecpackage.html

or if youre on Windows 7

Shark007.net - Windows 7 Codecs

(3)VLC

VLC media player - Open Source Multimedia Framework and Player

TBH the list is endless but that should sort you out
