Guys,

How safe is this - For a kid

What additional security steps can I take and do I actually need to?

Cheers,
Shaun

its the same as the rest of the internet to be honest. its safe because you have to accept ppl. and without accepting them they cant talk to you.

mainly its just friends sharing email their email address to talk to each other. its a 2 way or group conversation tool

You can turn on logging to log all conversations.

I've no wish to spy on her by reading all her interactions with friends.
Just want to make sure that she's safe from peado's

You are as safe as she is careful.

So if she only talks to friends then it is okay, starting to chat to random strangers it then is risky.

Should you wish to spy for a while, you can get programs that will monitor all MSN traffic on your network and log it.

maybe only allow her access to it on the communal computer

My 12 year old has MSN -- both on the familly computer and her own laptop

but I block msn traffic from her laptop (on the router) after 8.00pm and really encourage her to use it on the fammily computer

and get a little annoyed if she keeps closing it as I walk by

because the question about security and the internet is akin to asking the question "what flak jacket is best to wear when playing football in a minefield"

Yeah, we've had a chat already, she will only talk with friends.

So, should be OK.
I might just log for a little while, she's only 11 so at least it should all be innocent chit-chat anyway.
