PS3: Worth getting?
Now, I know that there are strong opinions. I have an Xbox 360, like my Xbox 360 but have the opportunity to get a PS3 free. Well, sort of free. I have a Sony credit card and have got 50,000 points (i.e. enough for a PS3) and there doesn't seem to be much else on there.
The only thing that it appears to do over the 360 is the iPlayer? I quite like the idea of that. The other reason for me is Tekken, but I've just pre-ordered that for the 360 ...

I'd say yes, but it doesn't really matter if I said yes or no, a fight would break out anyway
Interesting to read you can now access the i player, since moving to Oz it knows im here and doesn't allow me to access it through my pc.
The PS3 still thinks I'm UK based from when I opened my initial account, when ever I want to buy a game it expects to be paid for in pounds
I will give it a go tonight I guess ultimately it will block it because it will recognise the aussie ISP, but I'm hoping that somewhere down the line it will think it's a UK PS3 and let me in, damn that would be sweet

I'd say it's worth getting. Having had a 360 since launch, I bought a PS3 last year and now buy every game for the PS3. Haven't touched the 360 in months. Could have more to do with my friends having PS3's too though - and my becoming a trophy-*****
Since the 360 dashboard update, the PS3 just feels more classy and grown-up to me . . . not to mention quieter and more reliable The free the online play is superb for an occasional online-er like myself; and all that I miss is cross-game voice chat which will no doubt arrive sooner or later.

Another vote for yes from me. I have 2 360's and got a PS3 last year. The 360's hadn't been touched by me all year up until this week and spent all my time on the PS3. Now flicked back to the 360 for games I already had on the 360 to complete them. I prefer the PS3 as like Dunk says it feels more grown up and polished. Turning the 360 back on was a real shock listening to the fan, i'd never paid any attention to it before but after playing the PS3 for so long the Xbox is now deafening. Live is of course still streaks ahead but then it isn't free. When new games come out on both platforms it's a tough choice which format to get it on. Football I prefer on the PS3 but shooters i'll probably stay with the 360.

With the new price, bigger HD and less power consumption, it's a pretty compelling choice.
My 360 is a bit of an ornament TBH.
Just got a 320GB upgrade for my PS3 too, try doing that to your 360......
That said, obviously there are millions of very happy 360 owners! So, if you can, try both.

Don't forget the PS3 is a Blu-Ray player as well, which is why I bought my PS3. I didn't intend on using it as a games machine much, until I played CoD4 on-line with a few mates & I was hooked & now I'm prestige 10!!!! 360 is arguably the better out & out gaming machine, but a PS3 is more versatile. I do watch Blu-Ray films on it & they look sweet!
I'd say yes, grab yourself a PS3.

Interesting views. I have both as well, and my PS3 sits gathering dust most of the time while I use the 360 for most things. I generally only use the PS3 for PS3 specific things (exclusive games etc). Multi-format games I've found to generally be better on the 360 (faster framerates, less bugs etc).
The PS3 isn't that reliable either. I've had a blu-ray drive and a hard disk go in mine. My brothers will only play discs if the console is stood on it's end.
It's great to have both, but if I had to choose just one, it'd be the 360 every time

I had a PS3 for a few months and just didn't warm to it at all. Online gameplay was terrible, the controller crippled my hands and i loved my 360 so much more.
It has now lost its party piece too as you can pick up a blu-ray player for £100 now as well.

I'd say they're much of a muchness TBH. Personal choice. I perfer the size of the PS3 ones, but the 360 ones are very good. I think the trigger implementation on the 360 ones is far better, much more feel to them.
Like I said though, not much to choose. If you have huge, luberjack hands, then PS3 ones will feel small, possibly uncomfortable.

Since adding gioteck triggers to my PS3 controllers they're every bit as good as the 360 controllers now. The trigger extensions give you much better analogue control with the L2 and R2 buttons; makes driving games much easier as well as stopping your fingers slipping off the buttons. I hate using them without now.

another vote for the ps3, some of my mates have the xbox 360 only because its cheaper, but they all want a ps3 for the free online, blu ray and the bigger memory you can put in them. i can't fault mine, i have the button extenders and there brilliant.

Don't know what it is about the PS3. It just seems "sterile" somehow when compared to the competition, it has very few exclusive games that are worth getting, and the multi-format games tend to be better on the 360 (better framerates, less bugs etc). I know the PSN is free, but it also seems very laggy and I frequently have problems when trying to game online. No such problems with Live.
I've very glad I've got both (can't wait for the next Ratchett & Clank, and God of War games), but if I had to choose just one, it would definitely be the 360 every time, even if the reliability is a bit suspect

Had PS3 for over a yr now and had no problems with it. I personally prefer the xbox controllers.
I went with PS3 due to the blu-ray all-in one functionality and quite a few of my mates have them so better for online play.
Its a bit of a shift as 6-12mths ago most would be ah my 360 is better but seems to have swayed toward the PS3 if you take this thread in isolation.
Iain, in ref to the blu-ray on the PS3 not being as good as a standalone player. Im not disputing that as only watched via mine. But what sort of testing have you done that gave you that conclusion? Im guessing some side by side testing on the same tv, same settings etc? What was noticeably better. Genuinely interested.

i got my new slim one last night, and i was addicted. pretty pi55ed that i had to do brand new updates on it which took 30 min and had to update it before i even got to play a game. and then had to update before i played that specific game. but once that was done. i was in love.

I only buy bespoke 360 games on that now, otherwise PS3. Purely coz its quieter than my launch 360. Prefer the 360 controller by a mile though....

I have both and play the 360 often while the PS3 gathers dust. That is maybe down to the fact it's mostly online games I play and it's obviously just a matter of personal opinion too. I have always had Playstations and been a bit of a fanboy, but you can't deny how good Xbox Live is.
Having said the above, I have enjoyed playing the big PS3 only games like MGS4, and am still waiting patiently for GT5.

I've found that the standalone player gives a much better picture. The colours seem to have much more depth, and the picture looks somehow clearer, especially with fast moving scenes. It's difficult to describe, but when I switch back to the PS3 and play the same disc, it definitely doesn't look as good. The dvd upscaling on the standalone unit seems to do a better job as well, with less artifacts and better colour reproduction.
I'm not saying the PS3 does a bad job, but after getting a standalone player, I wouldn't go back.

Unless you're desperate to play dedicated PS3 games then I wouldn't bother having both ...there really isn't much between them (on a game playing front) despite what 'fan boys' tell you
PS I 'own' neither
