win98se Drama,!!!

andi,
Bit of an over kill to re-install windows for a corrupt file ?? or at least that's what I think. I can see all my important files after booting from my old drive, and mounting the other as a slave.
Some one must know what to do ?? Can't see anything on Microsoft.com that helps.
Cheers Phill C
PS Not that gutted, as my new PC might have blown a fuse, but at least this battleship is still working, although I was worried earlier. Two old drives of data ready to laplink to the new one once fixed.....

OK, I've done some research this time ( )
Msgsrv32.exe is a program (Windows 32-bit message server) that performs several background functions necessary for Windows operation.
These functions include:
Load installable Windows drivers at startup and unload them at shutdown
Run the shell program (usually Explorer.exe) and re-run the shell if it fails to respond
Mediate Plug and Play messages among various parts of the operating system
Coordinate automatic responses to Setup programs. This includes checking whether a Setup program has improperly overwritten Windows files, and optionally restoring the Windows versions of those files
Display the initial logon dialog box if networking is enabled
Play the system startup and shutdown sounds
It appears that the problem may be driver related, have you installed any new hardware recently?

I've seen that MSGSRV32 on so many occasions at work. It normally crops up when u install new hardware or something to do with device manager. Well thats where I have seen it the most. Never found a way round it except to reinstall/re-image the pc....
Sorry

No new hardware, although thinking about it, I did try and mount the drive from the new PC (to copy an O/S and files) and Norton jumped into DOS on startup and I didn't really look at the messages and hit enter.
So overwitting those files isn't an option ?
Thanks for the help, Phill C

Got my new PC working now, and my old one is working with the newer drive as a slave and the older one as a master, so at least I should be able to laplink all my files onto my new PC later this evening.
Any other ideas ?

babber just reinstall Win98se, 40mins tops, and u wont lose any files or settings. Its the easiest option. Sounds like u may have other files corrupted as well as the notorious MSGSRV32. This is normal Windows behaviour btw. All of a sudden key system files get corrupted for no apparent reason, MS eh

bioforger / HHXX / Andy,
Think I may have to do this unless I can use the other WIN98SE on the old hard disk to archieve my emails, that's the only drama I can see. The old files, docs, pictures will simple copy across I think ?
Thanks for the advise chaps, bloody Windoze

You can just copy the emails across as well. If you are using the full version of outlook then your emails will be stored in a pst file. If you are using Outlook Express then the emails will be in a folder somewhere. I can't remember where exactly but there will be in a folder named "Outlook Express" with files ending in .dbx

All,
I have got my new PC up and running and copied most of my files across. You were right that re-installing windows did sort it all out Exporting emails and address book wasn't easy at all, but have done it all now. WOW it flys AMD 1800 MHz processor with 500 megs of ram and a 7200 rpm H/D.....
Am decommissioning the old battleship (Dell optiplex) and taking the H/D across to my new PC. Children can have the Dell.
Anyway, thanks all for your help. It was greatly appreciated!!!

My hard disk (i think) has gone **** up or a file is corrupt. When I try booting I get an error:-
MSGSRV32 caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 017f:bff7b992
registers
EAX=000000001 and loads of numbers.
Then Stack dump and loads more number
It then hangs and won't start windows. If I hit alt control delete I get nothing in the task bar
Have reverted back to an old hard disk, more than six months old and can see all my data, etc. Just can't boot from the newer hard disk!!!! Proves the memory, hardware is ok apart from the H / disk.
This all started with a new PC that blew a circuit fuse in the power supply and it has gone down hill since. HELP!!!

Is it worth copying a version of MSGSRV32.EXE from the old drive to the new one ?
Or what about KERNEL32.DLL ?
OMG
Cheers Phill C
PS Running a through scandisk, but not holding out much hope!!

If the kernel's buggered then you need a new one, and they're not something you can just copy.
Not sure what that other file is, maybe finding out what it is and reinstalling to see if that will help..

What I was thinking was as they are from same machine, although built a little different, it might be worth a try ?? I'll see what scandisk does, but we shall see.
Microsoft do indicate a new install may be on the card. Wait for new PC and see what I can recover.
Cheers Phill C
PS Looks like scandisk will be a few hours yet!!
