Partition Magic problem - any users ?
#1
Since moving the Win98SE partition from position 1 (the first partition) to partition 2 (the 2nd) it won't boot.
I am right in thinking I can relocate Win98SE to this part of the hard disk, aren't I ?

Have you replaced the OS on the active (Primary) partion ? If you haven't then you either need to mark the 2nd partion as active or put an OS on the current active partion.

Jeff - can this be done ? Or do I need to switch places of Win98SE with BOOTMAGIC ?
Current (WIN98SE doesn't boot, but XP does)
Partition 1, FAT32, 50MB, No OS, just BOOTMAGIC
Partition 2, FAT32, 70GB, WIN98SE
Partition 3, NTFS, 40GB, WINXP
Old (Both Win98SE and WinXP worked)
Everything was working fine when I just had the 2 OS's on:
Partition 1, FAT32, 70GB, WIN98SE
Partition 2, NTFS, 40GB, WINXP

Installing Boot Magic on old config:
No, when I try and create a partition for bootmagic, say after WinXP, it can't find it, and so doesn't produce a menu to choose and OS.
I think I'm just going to have to play with it.
Just read their tech support and they also warn of a problem using ATA-100 controller cards which I'm also doing, DOH!

I think that should be ok, is partition 2 set to active?
Just got PM8 and have
p1 bootmagic
p2 w2k
p3 wxp
all boot fine, but had to muck around initially hiding partitions and making them active etc to get wxp to do a full install and not try and dual boot with w2k

Thanks all. Got to agree with Si on this - its messed things up rather badly. Specifically the magic boot program is a royal pain to remove or reinstall once its in.
Add to that Partition Magic does not like ATA100 or 133 controller cards and I've binned it. Good job it was an *evaluation version*
I've resorted to getting my hands dirty and doing it all manually with fdisk, etc... and its now working!
On another note, a competitor to Partition Magic, "Partition Manager 5.0" seems a nice program.

Why you guys even bothering with partition magic etc? Just dual/triple/quadruple boot by installing the os's and manually partioning when asked to do so on the install. IE do win98 first, then 2k then xp, all on seperate partitions will work fine in that order.
Is there a specific reason you use PM?
I have used it b4 and partitioning on the fly is a very dangerous option and myself and many others I know have never got it to work without corrupting the partitions Waste of bloody time imo as you seem to have found out

Partion Magic is fine....actually a very good product as is Drive Image also from Power Quest. Multiboot situations are always going to be a little more difficult to manage.
