CS CS CS Why Is Kheldar Such A HPW??? CS CS CS

Obvious retorts to one side please
Despite different connections and locations for connections, Kheldar continues to be a HPW
What would be the reasons for such a problem to exist if it's not the result of the PSTN??
ISP? Hardware? Software?
Would love to get this resolved as he is a tedious moaner ( ) and then we could just prove to him that he's a cr@p player as well
Ideas ladies/gents?

Not true
It's just that after the issue arose, all the CS just stopped posting CS threads Its NOT banned...
& I haven't got the time to flit between CSHQ & SN all the time to get the answers
Anyway I'm doing this to try & help you - dunno why I bothered

Erm to paraphrase the FA, this is what makes the game what it is.
Opinions, discussion, cussing.
Without it I'd be less interested. You keep up the camping, oops I mean whingeing Steve.

I too am rural Cambs but only 4 miles from a town (or slightly more if driving PTMW! ) & HH is my "weapon" of choice.
I think Steve's actually tried that
Have you noticed that when Steve's not playing, I'm quite often the HPW
What suggestions for making the most of the PC before connecting to the WWW???

I'm rural(ish) suffolk and use HomeHighway + Freeserve anytime. Performance wise (especially on locked ) I'd say I do very well (typically sub 60 ping).
Freeserve capacity has at peak time recently started to get pretty thin. (takes a few mins to connect between 6 and 7.30)
Steve needs to try someone other than BT Openworld to try and narrow the problem down to line, equipment or isp.
I understand he had to leave his ISDN line now so back to 56K modem. - Should still try a diff ISP though.

yep tried BT HH - not impressed.
ping was rarely under 100 and quite often closer to 200
no in middle of no where on 56k which usually only connects at 28,800 or maybe 32,000 or 34,666.
i have tried 2 isp's as i've always been with 2 isp's. basically both cr*p.
i am stuck til i buy a house that can give me adsl or cable

Steve because you cant get a good ping doesn not mean ISDN is crap.
Several us play quite happily with pings of 60 or under on ISDN. If playing on Locked or Rogue are a big part of your on-line use try freeserve.
If you have never ever had a good ping on any connection or ISP I would start looking closer to home at your PC as the common factor

hmmm well deano i used to do ok with BT.
150-180 ping
then they chaged some stuff.....updated dialler and different number to dial.
been a lot worse since. however other ISP is a bit erratic as well. sometimes 170 average and other times pinging 250.
pc has been rebuilt and has new bits now and is still no better so i not sure pc to blame.
i am resigned to being a hpw til i find a house with adsl / cable.
thats my opinion of ISDN m8. imho and in my experience ISDN is not enough of an improvement in connection to justify the increased cost.
esp as i hear that BT are dropping ADSL price to £29.99 a month from April i think ??
i've got 2 isp's and 3 mail addresses as it is now !! i dont want anymore ! and i dont want to lose the BT one atm.

I use demon, possibly a bit pricey because I pay for the off peak surftime with my HH and then pay for a demon a/c. But they are a proper ISP and don't do crap like 2hr cut offs.
I used to mostly play Tribes 2 and my pings were round the 300 mark dropped to under 200
Edited to say HH is ISDN and therefore digital, so if it's working it's working at full speed. This basically means the problem would be the ISP.
Either:
1. They suck generally
2. Their routing sucks (surely they peer ay LINX?)
3. Their bandwidth sucks (not enough)
A good way to locate where something sucks is to use traceroute.
Get up and dos box/command window and do tracert cs.whoc.org.uk
you should see something like this (this is from my office):
Tracing route to cs.whoc.org.uk [195.92.252.206]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 <10 ms <10 ms <10 ms *.*.*.*
2 <10 ms <10 ms <10 ms *.*.*.*
3 <10 ms <10 ms 10 ms *.*.*.*
4 <10 ms <10 ms 10 ms *.*.*.*
5 <10 ms <10 ms 10 ms ge7-0-0.core1.lhr1.globix.net [209.10.20.198]
6 <10 ms <10 ms 11 ms so-4-3-0.core1.lhr2.globix.net [209.10.11.190]
7 <10 ms <10 ms 10 ms ge0-0.peer2.lhr2.globix.net [209.10.12.206]
8 <10 ms 10 ms <10 ms artichoke.as5388.net [195.66.225.26]
9 <10 ms <10 ms 10 ms BNR-1.TCL.AS5388.NET [195.92.200.194]
10 10 ms 20 ms 10 ms BNR-1.BRM.as5388.net [195.92.201.161]
11 20 ms 10 ms 20 ms BNR-2.GRL.AS5388.NET [195.92.200.131]
12 10 ms 20 ms 10 ms HNR-1.GRL.AS5388.NET [195.92.200.138]
13 10 ms 20 ms 10 ms cs.whoc.org.uk [195.92.252.206]
(first four hops ips masked out for sensitivity)
but basically look for a hop where the reponses suddenly increase and stays increased for the rest of the trace (one hop by itself with increases then back down again is probably just a heavily loaded router). You'll probably find it's either inside your ISP or at their border with their upstream provider.
And Yes, I do wish I played CS from work I would be *the* vlpb
